lots of fun

I just got back form attending my first Brazilian Jujistsu (BJJ) class with Carlos Valente, one of the legends in the BJJ world. He grew up with the Gracies in Brazil and has traveled and competed all over the world spreading BJJ. The class was great and I'm excited to have the opportunity to go back.

Professor Valente has a great sense of humor. He tends to tease the adult students but does it perfectly where there's never any hard feelings. We started out with a great series of warmup exercises and since I've been training and running so much I handled them fine. We then went over a couple of techniques and spent the rest of the class grappling. After class there was an hour of open mat rolling where I really loosened up and submitted two guys there. I've never done BJJ before but with nine years of Judo and my time with Team Quest I quickly adapted. I have a few habits from judo I need to shake and then I'll be good to go. Being long and lean is really helpful in BJJ whereas with Judo it often felt like it hindered because I have such a high center of gravity.

Anyway, very good stuff. Tired now.
