bird flu stats

don't ask me either why I decided to look this up today in the first place, or why I decided to share it with you all...the answer to both is I don't know. So anyway, here are stats of confirmed Human Cases of the bird flu compiled originally by the WHO but I found this stuff on the website Global Health Facts and this is of 6/20/06 (or last Tusday as I type) The death count is in parentheses.

Azerbaijan- 8 (5)
Cambodia- 6 (6)
China- 19 (12)
Dijbouti- 1 (0)
Egypt- 14 (6)
Indonesia- 51 (37)
Iraq- 2 (2)
Thailand- 22 (15)
Turkey- 12 (4)
Vietnam- 93 (42) (also the birthplace of SARS)
Worldwide Total so far: 228 (128)

So...I don't really know what to think...considering that for most of these places this has been happening since 2004. I also found a map with coverage of birds believed or known to be infected. Most of Asia, 75-80% of Europe, and less than half of Africa were highlighted. Nothing in N. America, nothing in Australia. This is quite a concern, at least it feels that way to me...but honestly, after seeing those numbers I was ...eh...a little bit relieved than I had been when I was relying on newsmen claiming that the disease is killing in record numbers and sweeping through Europe...pardon the pun...like a plague. I'm not saying this isn't a worrisome time for the world...especially Asia. And while I do think that neccessary precautions should be taken into account, I, for one, am not going to let it stress me out or scare my like it has been.
