Clare London fangirls over Lee Child

Sep 19, 2014 22:31

I've finished a pretty gruesome week with a most perfect evening! I went to see Lee Child tonight at a local Waterstones bookshop. What a brilliant time! There were only about 40 of us, and he went straight into a very relaxed Q&A. Very charming, an excellent speaker - and he fended off the "WTF? Tom Cruise as Reacher??" questions perfectly :). He was also wonderfully supportive of genre fiction and its role in bringing pleasure to millions of people's reading lives. Bless him, he's had a really full schedule and we were the last stop, he's flying back out to the US tomorrow. Here I am, getting a copy of his new book signed. Look at that professional and practised smile of his! He looks cool and distinguished, I look like an obsequious rabbit in headlights. My God, was I a fangirl :).

Please let me squee about the second picture, though. That's me giving HIM a copy of my book " target="_blank">FREEMAN! (note how my friend is taking the picture so she didn't have to stand beside me and be embarrassed by my utter nerve!) But seriously, and as I briefly told him, FREEMAN was inspired by Jack Reacher character - laconic, unreliable narrator, virtually rootless, self-absorbed - and written in a further homage to Lee's own sparse but perfectly accessible style.

I've always dreamed of giving him a copy, presumptuous, eh? :). But what a gent he was. He even asked me to sign it for him *omfgblushahoy*. Hubby says he may want something to read on his long haul journey home, you never know *rolls eyes*.
