My clinical in Surgical is almost over!!! After this reading break, I only have 2 more days in the hospital on the surgical floor before heading back to classes to finish up for the year! I have seen so much and learnt a lot of things during these 7 weeks of clinical.
The patient research didn't prove to be too time consuming and I will admit I was overly anxious in the beginning. The off unit days were fantastic. I got to go to the operating room, the recovery room, and outpatients unit. I also got to meet a wide variety of patients and their reason for stay at the hospital. ( Left hip fistula/abscess, bladder stones, left knee arthroplasty, hernia repair). I was able to watch a left knee replacement in the operating room and it was such an experience!!!
I can't seem to recall all the specific details but all in all I was able to use the lab skills I have learnt and applied in on the floor. I am now more comfortable with giving injections, using syringes and hanging IV bags/medications.
The upcoming two months is going to be brutal with all the memorization and labs and waking up early and then going back home to study. So while I have nothing to do for this reading break, I think I am going to just stay at home and start studying ahead of everyone else and hopefully this can make time go faster.
