it

there is what is called, "the indescribable 'it'" in performers.  it's what turns a rather poor singer into a star, a vocal virtuoso into an unknown. without the It, you cannot grab the audience by whatever they hold dear and keep them rivited.

my friends, i have a confession to make. I have been watching American Idol.

American Idol -- the show that makes music critics of us all.

seriously, though, there are some performers that simply have the magnet, and some that don't. there are the perfomers that make eye contact with You, let You know that they are singing to You, about You, and You are the only one in the room. and they do this for every person in the audience, both the live one, and the TV audience. and then there are the performaces that are so dull, you can focus on cleaning the cat's wounded face and not miss anything.

that's always been my biggest fear about singing -- that i won't capture the audience. how can I perform if i cannot capture the audience? the only way to be successful as a performer is to capture the audience quickly. it's like writing anything -- if you cannot capture your reader's attention in the first few words, you will be forever playing a game of catch-up with their boredom. When your audience/reader/target group is bored out of their mind, they will never remember you, or what you do.

that said, i've got to figure out what i'm singing for a talent show at the church. and since i can't play guitar, it's probably going to be acapella. I've sung various verses of Amazing Grace for chapel twice already, so I won't be singing that. int heory, i'm supposed to put something irish-ish. and no matter how appropriate Danny Boy might be, that song is plan B. i just don't have a plan A yet.
