Title: Towards the Future Rating: G Word Count: 442 Pairing: Clara/Eleven Warnings: Spoilers for 7x13, The Name of the Doctor Summary: Anything was possible now that they knew each other.
“You remember everything, then? Every life you lived, all the adventures you had?” The Doctor smiled at Clara as he leaned against the TARDIS console, trying to be as tactful as possible with the questions. The trip through his timeline had made him realize just how harsh he could be at times, and this could not be one of those times.
“Yeah, mostly. Some parts I can remember more strongly than others, but if I think for a bit, I can usually remember the other stuff too. Is it like that for you?” she asked in return, doing her best to smile back.
“Pretty much. One of the downfalls of growing old, I think.” He figured that Clara was nearly as old as him now, once all her lives were added up. She had certainly lived more than he had, and he could tell that she was struggling to cope with it all. Deciding to take a risk, he held out his hand and suggested, “I think the old girl trust you enough now to behave if you want to try flying her again.”
“Really? It’s about time!” Clara brightened at this and placed her hand in his, allowing him to draw her close.
As he did a quick review on what buttons did what and how to flick certain levers to get the best desired output, the Doctor realized that Clara was no longer The Impossible Girl - he knew all about her now, as she knew him, and there was a connection between them that hadn’t been present before.
He puzzled over it while Clara tried her hand at flying the TARDIS, seeing echoes in her movements of past lives where this type of technology was commonplace. He finally figured it out when she laughed in delight as the time machine responded to her actions without throwing a fit, making him laugh as well.
“Clara,” he began, sweeping her into a hug as they sailed through time, “Let’s go somewhere nice and quiet, just the two of us, and do nothing but bake soufflés and talk. A…A date, if you’d like.” A date. A date because he wanted to be with her, now that everything was possible and they had a shared future to discover.
She looked surprised for a moment, then nodded and gave him a true smile and looped her arms around his neck. “A soufflé-making date, huh? Sounds like fun. Just no alien invasions, ‘kay?”
“No alien invasions, I promise.” Reaching past her to set the coordinates, the Doctor promised himself that he would help make the best soufflé the universe had ever seen.
Well, that's completely perfect! Clara being almost as old as him, the Doctor getting a reminder to gentle it up, and a soufflé that's just a soufflé. <3
Mini-ramble: Clara may actually be older, depending on how many lives she lived compared to the Doctor's complete lifespan so far (Rory is older than both of them, at least prior to The Snowmen). It just adds another layer to their relationship I think, and I hope that gets touched on a bit in future episodes.
It just adds another layer to their relationship I think, and I hope that gets touched on a bit in future episodes. I hope so too! Really fascinating -- she's seen as much as him and knows him from the beginning. Compared to, say, the themes in School Reunion and "mysterious figure just drops out of the sky", it's a nice subversion and I would be sad if it wasn't at least hinted at.
Mmmm, this was pretty sweet :) I liked the way you described the shift in the Doctor's relationship with Clara, nice insight. And the fact that she had lived so much, become old as he was, and of course would be scarred by it all as well. Lovely work!
