Hi Claire,
You sure missed some excitement here over the weekend.
Rain from hurricane Ivan made the river go up HIGH!!!
Our house is fine. The water came up the slope but
didn't get onto the trail. It was about three feet
from the top of the slope. On saturday night a
firefighter came to our front door with written
warnings saying that the crest was projected to be
higher than the flood of 55. (The biggie in town
history) He warned us that we might have to evacuate
and advised us to move our cars to higher ground just
in case...It was a pretty nerve-wracking night. I
didn't believe that our house would get flooded but
just the chance of it happening made me nervous. The
roar of the water rushing by was so loud and it
creeped me out so much that I had to shut the windows.
The next morning was sunny and bright and there was a
carnival atmosphere downtown as people gathered near
the bridge to watch the water getting higher and
higher. Dad had lots of adventures getting photos; I'm
sure he will tell you all about it.
See you VERY SOON!
Love, mom
Oh my God! Mom! I just saw pictures of the flood online. Matty sent me a link (Look for it under COMMENTS on the 'ungodly hour of seven' entry). This sounds incredible-- I'm sorry I missed it. I guess everyone is grateful for the protection of the bike path-- better than sandbags. I bet dad's boss wet his pants with delight in all the excitement of the news coverage. Dad and the photographers must have gotten some great shots. It also sounds like the flood brought the whole town together-- almost like a celebration. People were celebrating the fact that we live by a river, with everyone bound together by the beauty and the threat. This seems to me the exact opposite of Bastille Day which is a bullshit exhibition for the tourists and the business owners, since there is absolutely nothing French about Frenchtown. Every time a brochure refers to Frenchtown as a "small river community," I want to vomit, but it's an accurate description, really. I miss the menacing river.
