1. I hate everything about you - Three Days Grace

I hate everything about you
Why do I love you?
You hate everything about me

“Hey, there!” He grinned with his mouth still half full. “For the second time this week you’re taking a break from the lifestyle of the rich and famous to bless us with your presence? If I didn’t know better I’d think you missed me, Princess.”
Maryse couldn’t help but roll her eyes at him. “I hope you choke on that sandwich, Norwell.”
“Nah, you don’t”, countered Jamie who had caught the tiniest twitch of her mouth. “You love me.”
“You’re becoming far too confident for my taste.” she chuckled. “You should know by now that I would never have myself been publicly associated with a penniless dipshit like you.”
Jamie was just about to make a very sappy joke about how much he liked it when she talked dirty while still in her College uniform, when they both heard steps from the hall. Maryse took a reluctant step back, but her eyes were still shining with mischief.

2. Amaranth - Nightwish

Apart from the wandering pack
In this brief flight of time
We reach for the one, whoever dare

Maryse knew exactly that saying yes would be just another mistake.
Evan was obedient to the point of being nothing more but a slave to her father and a potential danger should he ever find out the truth about her.
But in that moment, with him looking at her like she hung the moon, the nagging feeling of loneliness, that she had been trying to bury for weeks suddenly became too much to bear. She desperately needed someone to take her mind off the mess her life had so rapidly become those past weeks - someone whose gaze was not clouded by barely concealed distrust or pity. And there had even been a time when Evan and she had been friends - real friends. What harm could one evening do?
“Dinner sounds great”, she replied with a small smile that never reached her eyes. “Let’s go.”

3. Just Human - Carpark North

I did right to walk
And leave you there
Cause no one can stand
Your fear of fear

Maryse knew that by falling back into old patterns she was about to destroy everything that she had been fighting for, but with every single step she took back, it became easier for her to pretend. It became easier to ignore the suffocating feeling of having her life fall apart right before her eyes. Easier not to think about Suki. Easier not to miss Jamie… Jamie, who had turned and fled from her, when she had finally dared to let him have a glance of the dark within her.

4. Skin - Alexz Johnson

I drift away to a place
Another kind of life
Take away the pain
I create my paradise

The heat had stirred her from her sleep- black and dreamless- and just moments later the sharp scent of smoke had driven her out of her bed.
A thin trace of blood ran down her arm from where she had ripped out the IV. It was the first time in two years she didn’t have a needle sticking to her skin. She could see the reflection of flames through the small window above the room door, but she wasn’t afraid. In fact, she didn’t feel anything.
The drugs running through her veins made her numb and turned her thoughts a hazy mess. All that remained was a choked instinct that was just barely strong enough to make her body move on its own accord.
She stretched her hand out hesitantly and gave the handle a tentative push. The metal burned the skin of her palm, but the door opened. It seemed that the automatic locking system on the floor had been deactivated somehow and so, for the first time in two years, she was able to leave the room she had so deliberately chosen to be her home and prison cell.
She meandered through deserted corridors she had never seen before; mechanically putting one foot in front of the other like a puppet. The wish to survive was reduced to a primal urge, deeply buried underneath a massive heap of tranquilisers and feelings of guilt and self-loathing.
No matter where she turned her head, she saw thick metal bars in front of every window; the building had been hermetically locked. There was no way out.
She would burn like a witch at the stake and she thought that maybe this was for the best; that the world was a better and safer place without her in it.
