“Make sure our paths never cross again. Whatever it takes...”
“So Hiro Nakamura took Claire with him?”
Angela Petrelli was standing in her office, talking to Noah Bennet. He was the first one to call after the eclipse- and what he had to tell her troubled her as much as it was exactly what she needed to keep the promise she had given the desperate son that had come from the future to beg for her help.
“Tell me immediately, when she comes back. I will have the Hatian come for her. I made arrangements, that will keep her save once and for all.” She closed her eyes with an impatient sigh, while she waited for Bennet's somehow expected protest to subside.
“You have no need to worry, Noah. The Hatian's assignment does not involve you and your family. He'll just make sure that she stays out of trouble from now on; living the normal life you always wanted her to have.”
The telephone almost slid from her hand, when suddenly the door opened and Peter came in, the Hatian following him in his usual silence like a shadow.
“This is not a matter of discussion. Call me as soon as you have any news.”
She hung up, put the phone on the desk and then turned to Peter, her face impossible to read.
“You found him. Good.” She halted before her next question; not because she was afraid, but because deep down she already knew the answer. “Where is your brother?”
Peter flinched at that, sorrow prominent in his eyes, when he helplessly looked first to the ground and then to the ceiling before finally saying: “He is with Dad now...”
“I see. The alpha dogs unite.” She gave her best to look unimpressed by this revelation, but Peter knew that the thought of her favourite son, allying with the enemy she had once shared her life and bed with, broke her heart. “It doesn't matter though. We'll take Arthur down nonetheless. And then we'll deal with your brother. Later. First there is something...” She hesitated, like she was fighting with herself over what she had to do next.
“I'm sorry, Peter, but there is something I need to tell you. You should sit down.”
“I can barely believe that after everything that happened today there are still things that are able to scare me, but you actually do now.” Peter stated with a nervous little laugh and sat down on the leather cushions by the window. “Did something happen here during the eclipse? Are the others alright?” When his mother didn't answer right away, he felt himself get uneasy. The collar of his jacket seemed to become tighter with every passing moment, making it harder for him to breathe. “Where is Claire...?”
“Your intuition never fails you. Especially when it comes to her. Your bond is special...” Angela sat down next to him and gently too his hand in hers; one of the few motherly gestures she had ever presented her sons with. “Claire's not here, Peter. She...”
“You sent her away again, didn't you? You really know how to make someone feel welcome.”
“Peter, please hear me out.” She avoided his gaze as she took a deep breath, like she was trying to pick up the courage to go on. Peter had hardly ever seen her so on edge and it scared him.
“I sent her into hiding with her father. I thought it was best to keep her under the radar s long as the united forces of Pinehearst were out looking for her. Your father must have assumed that this would be my next step and sent two of his henchmen after them. Elle Bishop... and Sylar.”
She felt his hand starting to shake violently between hers as the pieces slowly started to fall into place for him.
Sylar.
Claire.
The eclipse.
“What happened?”
“They found them in the safe house Bennet had picked for them; just as the eclipse was beginning. When Sylar and Elle discovered their powers were not working things got out of control and shots were being fired. Claire got hit and her body wasn't able to heal the wound. Bennet took her to a hospital when things got worse, but you have to understand... Claire had never been ill in her entire life. The gunshot caused an infection and her immune system was unable to cope with it. We hoped the end of the eclipse would change things, but...”
“Say it.”
Peter looked at her. His voice and expression were blank of any emotion, but she could feel that his whole body was trembling. The Hatian just stood there; watching them in silence. “Say it, mother.”
“I'm sorry, Peter. Claire's dead...”
