Urban Poverty in Canada with Toronto Journalist John Lorinc

Toronto journalist John Lorinc will present a lecture on the urban dimensions of poverty in Canada at the beginning of the 21st century, looking at issues such as the growth of low-wage service sector ghettos in global cities; the plight of urban aboriginals in western Canadian cities; the neighbourhood geography of poverty in the GTA; and the economic disenfranchisement of recent immigrants. He'll also discuss a range of potential remedies that should be considered by all orders of government as well as the private and not-for-profit sectors. Lorinc began his reporting career at The Varsity in 1983 and appears regularly in The Globe and Mail, Toronto Life and other publications. He contributed essays to both volumes of the uTOpia series (Coach House) and wrote the politics column for Spacing Magazine's municipal election blog last fall. His book, "The New City: How the Crisis in Canada's Urban Centres is Re-Shaping the Nation" (Penguin Canada, 2006) was chosen as one of The Globe and Mail's Best 100 Books of 2006. Copies will be available after the lecture for $20, including tax.
