Hit US Spy Show ‘The Americans’ Dropped by ITV
08th January 2015
For a KGB double agent posing as an ordinary US citizen during the height of the Cold War, just making it through each day in one piece could often prove to be a Ruskie business.
The constant fear of being outed, double crossed or killed must have been an ever-present threat, or at least that’s how it seems from watching Matthew Rhys’ hit thriller import The Americans.
And now it seems luck has finally run out for the Stateside spy series on this side of the Atlantic, with ITV announcing that it’s dropping the programme from its Saturday night schedules after two seasons.
The show, in which the Cardiff actor plays one half of a pair of Russians posing as a regular married couple from Washington DC during the ‘80s Reagan era, has been a huge success across the Pond.
Emmy nominated for its first two series, The Americans has turned the 40-year-old Welshman into a big star in the US, with critics comparing the show to similar phenomenons like Homeland and raving about the performance of its leading man.
But while US network FX has renewed the show for a third season of 15 episodes (due to launch on January 28) an ITV spokesperson confirmed they would not be following suit.
It’s thought the reason for the decision is due to poor viewing figures.
