Howell would have preferred to arrive rather fashionably late, but his duty as a chaperon and as Prom Court organizer meant he had to be at prom early.

The dinner with Maggie and her family had gone very well - it seemed that throughout the night Jyushirou had been dying to say something to him, and Howell was almost certain what that something was, so he took great care to never be left alone with the man. Hopefully he wouldn't be pulled aside at prom and given some kind of dire warning.

He watched the students arriving from under the brim of his fedora, looking dashing in his high-waisted twenties-style pinstripe suit.

Maggie's dress matched her hat, but she was much too tall for 1920's fashion. She did not match her dress at all.
Now, doing her duties as a chaperon as well, Maggie patrolled the perimetre of the dance floor, watching for inappropriate actions with her book under her arm. She carried with her a copy of the Triumphal Chariot of Antimony, a book on alchemical processes and philosophy. Now and again she'd glance back at Howell, just for a second.

He couldn't help but wander over to her - she seemed to have wandered off right after dinner, and Howell still didn't want to get the older brother treatment. There was nothing untoward going on here, honestly.

"What's that one then?" he asked, looking over her shoulder.

She smiled a little, the attention making her feel sort of special. "The Triumphal Chariot of Alchemy," she said quietly. "Big Sis let me borrow it from the city library's archives as long as I promised to get it back. It's really interesting to see how science worked way back then." She felt the closeness, the genuine interest that Howell radiated. Of course thouse silly rumours were just rumours, school kids were full of gossip about themselves and others.

"Jushirou is a pretty good cook, right?" she asked. Goodness knows neither she nor either of her sisters could really cook anything more complicated than curry.

"Dinner was delicious!" Howell said, and meant it - he hadn't expected the man to be domestic, but the food had been lands better than most of what he'd eaten lately.

"Scientific text, is it? They're a bit boring for my taste but it sounds fascinating." He tipped the brim of his fedora up so he could get a better look at the text on the page. "You get to wondering, every once in a while, what would the world be like if alchemy had remained a viable science?"
