Lelouch looked up at light from an oak chess board with rounded edges. The pieces were milky white and jet black glass, lovingly detailed. Lelouch smiled up at him and motioned towards the pulled out, empty seat. "Welcome." He said through pearly incisors.

Light briefly wondered if this was really the same person from the files... but he also knew that looks could be deceiving.

He took a seat across from Lelouch and set his school bag on the floor. He looked over the chess set, admiring the detail then back up at Lelouch. "These are very nice," he commented.

"It's my own. I hear you're quite good so I wanted you to have a worthy board to play on." Lelouch leaned down, resting his chin in his long fingers.

The rest of the club was turning subtle and not so subtle eyes towards them. If the indominable Lelouch said someone was good, they were about to see something big.

He wouldn't deny that. He'd always been quite good at chess, and he wasn't going to say otherwise to fish for compliments like some people did. He nodded, and looked around. People were staring. Not that he minded.

"Well, I enjoy a good game of chess, and I love a challenge." He smiled again. "And I don't have to be around here in Clairbourn long to have heard about your skills as a chess player. I've heard you're pretty much unbeatable." He hadn't really heard that per se, but he could tell that Lelouch would be a worthy opponent.

And even in something like this, a game of chess, Light wouldn't lose so easily.

"We'll see about that." Lelouch looked down at his pieces and imagined the people he knew in their places: May as the Queen, showing her importance to his plans, Duo a complaining Bishop, Trowa a blankfaced rook and all the anonymous dipshits of this school he couldn't care one bit about as his pawns.

"As a newcomer, i'll let you go first."

Light nodded, and looked over the pieces. Which one to move first... After a few seconds, he took a pawn, and moved it forward. It was a neutral move, as many of the beginning moves were. He looked up at Lelouch, and waited for him to move.

That one's cautious. Lelouch made an unusual opening move. He moved the pawn in front of his king two spaces forwards, exposing the vital piece.

Really, now? That's a bold move... Light stared at Lelouch for a moment. Not that a bold move in chess necessarily meant anything... But you could tell a lot about someone by how they move in a strategic game like this.

He picked up the pawn blocking one of his bishops, and moved it out of the way.

Lelouch continued to make seemingly dangerous moves: His King went forward into the place previously occupied by the Pawn. Already he was setting up the dynamic he knew so well. I, Lelouch Vi Brittania am that king. He will come to capture me and he will never see my other pieces.

While Lelouch made dangerous moves, Light's suspicion grew. This must be the same person from the files, there's no doubt in my mind. On the other hand, Light made more cautious moves. After all, a good defense was the best offense, right?

He smiled as he moved his bishop out, able to put th king in check, but not doing so quite yet.

"You're awfully daring," he commented as he released the piece.

"If the king doesn't move, how can the other pieces follow him?" Lelouch said as he moved another pawn forward, starting a reverse wedge formation all centered around the central piece. "I understand your father follows this philosophy in his investigations."

"Touché." Light said, watching his opponent. He moved his eyes to the board and looked over the pieces. Lelouch was certainly making this challenging for him... It was pleasing.

But his eyes snapped up when Lelouch mentioned his father. "... I suppose you could look at it that way." It occurred to the brunette that he wasn't the only doing the studying. But why was this guy studying him? Not that he had anything to hide...

"He's the King yet he's always the first to arrive on the scene of an investigation." Lelouch wondered what light could know about him. Did he know about his involvement in the gang conflict? Regardless: "Your move."

Light wouldn't admit that he knew anything about the Lelouch from the files. So far, he was only assuming that it was the same person as the one sitting in front of him. He's on the run. From the law... And he's wanted.

For now, Light would just study him.

Picking up his king, he moved it forward.

He's imitating me! What a facile provocation. Lelouch swore he would not be drawn in by it. He was merely moving his King forward to...something. But he was not being provoked.

Light smirked up at Lelouch. "It's as you said, 'If the King doesn't move, how can the other pieces follow him?' Isn't that right?"

Besides, if Light didn't start going on the offensive, then he wouldn't get anywhere.
