Neither Sara nor Michael believes him when Lincoln says that he did not carefully orientate the mirror at the foot of his bed.
That’s only fair, given he did carefully orientate it. Just not for the reasons they imagine.
He hardly ever spares it a look during. No point. Why would he want to see a flat, two-dimensional image of them when he has, right under his eyes and within his reach, splayed thighs, rolling muscles and succulent curves?
It’s after that he likes to look. It’s different when Michael and Sara have fallen asleep, sometimes Sara lying half on him, sometimes spooning Michael, sometimes Michael holding onto him and Sara cuddling both of them, sometimes...
The desire unleashed and satiated, the need worn off, they’re all glossy skin - with rosy imprints of nails and teeth here and there - and white sheets haphazardly pulled up, Sara’s hair like a rich veil around them.
They look like a picture, a subtle arrangement, beautiful and peaceful. Lincoln guesses it should be decadent, that intertwining of limbs and hands and breaths...? But that’s not the picture the mirror sends back; far from it.
He tightens his embrace around Michael and brushes a kiss on the slope of Sara’s shoulder. Michael always sleeps like a log when he feels safe, but Sara blinks sleepily and shifts against him.
The image in the mirror blurs briefly with her small movement and rearranges itself, its improbable harmony never disrupted.
