Yeah, I was pretty amazed when I first saw it freshly painted - new paint right over the giant cracks! I couldn't understand why anyone would bother to paint it without fixing the concrete blocks, either. On the other hand, it took much longer than I was expecting for those blocks to fall - I've been watching them for 4 years now. I'd have expected it to have happened a lot sooner with water getting into the cracks and freezing, as must happen in the winter.
I think it was probably a little corner store. If you look at the first picture, it seems as if the word, "LIQUOR", used to be painted on the top left of the door. Also, the bricks on the top at the corner and for all of the rest of the building, halfway down each side away from the door, are different - not concrete blocks. I suspect that there used to be a window on each wall near the corner that got covered with concrete blocks - it's the story of Detroit, really. The neighborhood got more dangerous as the city declined, the store windows were covered with concrete blocks, and a new metal door was added for security, but the business couldn't survive and eventually the building was abandoned...
