I got: Supernatural Historical Dramedy (Aka Steampunked Magic, or werewolves and witches and vampires running about in period clothes and struggling with Victorian life.) from
zombres.
When small time reporter Nate Barton begins an accidental alliance with a guild of thieves, a series of murders leads them to a conspiracy that threatens to overthrow the British Empire. Set in an alternate 19th century London, Like Clockwork is a compelling tale of adventure, mad science, sex and murder.
During the first World's Fair in 1851, a scientist named Jeter presented his research on incredible advancements in steam power, which far surpassed that of electricity. This marks the beginning of a new, steam-powered industrial revolution, and two years later the first steam-powered airship is put into mass production.
It's now 1870, and London has become a mecca for scientists and engineers furthering the steam-powered renaissance. Our story opens on the mysterious murder of one such scientist, the theft of his invention, and his son’s investigation of his death.
The scientist’s son is Nate Barton, a novice reporter who in his inquiry uses his father’s key to break into the British Museum. Finding very little, he looks out the window, only to be startled by a pair of legs crashing into the glass. A beautiful, scantily clad woman falls down onto the balcony, dropping some of the stolen jewels from her bag as she does. Upon seeing each other, the two panic and fear the other might turn them into the police. Nate starts pleading with the woman not to turn him in, because he was just trying to solve his father’s murder. Knowing she cannot let Nate escape after seeing her face, but not wanting to kill him after hearing his sob story, the woman (whose name is Annalise), reluctantly drags him back to her Guild’s thieves’ den. The two make their escape, unaware that they are being followed by Orlando Prescott, the new chief of police.
Laverna, the leader of the thieves’ guild, is unimpressed by Annalise’s sloppiness and scolds her, telling her that she has put the entire Guild in jeopardy. She orders her second hand man, Dorian, to execute Nate immediately. Nate begs for his life, bluffing and claiming that he knows information that could be useful to the Guild. At this point Orlando reveals himself, holding a gun to Laverna’s head and pointing another at Nate. Dorian immediately attacks Orlando, and there is a brief scuffle that ends with both Nate and Orlando in the custody of the thief lord.
Laverna goes to deliberate with the other higher-ups, and leaves Annalise and her boyfriend and fellow thief, Brett, to guard the hostages. Annalise shows Brett the jewels she lifted from the museum, and the two go off to “celebrate” the job’s success, to the embarrassment of the captives. Orlando tries to get Nate to tell him the information he was going to tell Laverna, and during their conversation it is revealed that Orlando has a prosthetic arm, which was the result of an attack during his first year on the force. Nate finds this curious and presses him further about the event. The two discover that the two men who attacked Orlando are the same men who were witnessed fleeing the scene of Dr. Barton’s murder.
Orlando’s police dirigible arrives in a grand rescue attempt, made slightly less grand due to the fact that they were both unguarded. Nate tells Orlando that his father was working with a man named Nikola Tesla, and that he may know something about the men who killed his father and attacked Orlando. Nate urges them to take go to Tesla’s place of residence, but Orlando decides that he can’t waste police resources on what is essentially a hunch. Knowing it is too risky to attempt to try and take down the Guild at this time, Orlando leaves, but emphatically encourages Nate to keep him informed on the situation.
Annalise returns to find Orlando gone and Nate preparing to leave. Panicked and afraid of what Laverna would do if she learned of a second disappointment from her today, she pins Nate against the wall and threatens to kill him. Nate figures that she’s now in the same boat as him and proposes that they not wait around for Laverna to kill them and escape the den together. She agrees and the two leave to find Tesla.
Character Bios (the pictures are first the character design and then the actor.)
STARRING:
Lee Pace as NATHANIEL (NATE) BARTON
Nate is a novice reporter for the Daily Times. Usually a gentle and proper young man, he is forced into a life of crime through the investigation of his father's murder. When he meets Annalise, he must adapt quickly to her dangerous lifestyle and while he is clumsy and untrained in any sort of combat, he proves to be resourceful and quick-witted during battle and is good at getting them out of tight spots. He soon develops feelings for Annalise, but does not reveal his affection due to her intimidating and jealous boyfriend, Brett.
Olivia Wilde as ANNALISE PORTER
Annalise is one of the top bandits of the Thieves’ Guild. As headstrong as she is beautiful, she acts spontaneously and selfishly, not caring about the consequences. The only person she will take orders from is Laverna, the leader of the thieves' guild, who took her in as a teenager. As a talented acrobat, she would prefer to escape a fight rather than have to enter combat, but is skilled with a dagger and will kill people when forced. At first she can't stand Nate, and sees him only as an imposition, but she grows to like him as their adventures continue (though she refuses to admit this). Nate questions why Annalise continues to follow him when she outwardly displays such disdain for him, she often avoids the question and explains is that there’s something off about him that she can’t put her finger on.
Andrew Lee Potts as NIKOLA TESLA
After his time at university, acclaimed inventor Nikola Tesla moved to London, where he became engrossed in the scientific community. Dr. Barton heard of Tesla’s contributions to the industrial revolution and sent him some of his notes for the machine he was working on. Knowing that these notes were invaluable to the operation of the machine, Dr. Barton’s murderers are now intent on finding Tesla. Tesla is known as an insatiable ladies’ man, putting women second only to his inventions. When Nate and Annalise approach him about the stolen machine, he becomes incredibly paranoid and begs them to take him with them in their travels, not only to unravel the mystery but also as protection from Arlington and his men. Tesla proves invaluable to the duo, with his ability to provide them with new weapons and means of transport, as well as connections throughout the city.
Jude Law as ORLANDO PRESCOTT
Orlando is the head chief of police in London, the youngest in several generations. The sometimes friend, sometimes foe of the main trio is obsessed taking down Arlington, the man responsible for a number of murders in Great Britain and for taking his arm during his first year of duty. Orlando is very serious about his obligations and disapproves of Nate’s unconventional and often illegal means of searching for Arlington, but does not apprehend them because of their similar goals. Though being strictly no-nonsense, he has a soft spot for Emery, although their relationship is unclear.
Carey Mulligan as EMERY LATIMER
Entering pilot school when she was only 16, Emery is the prodigious pilot of Orlando’s police dirigible. She is known for her cheerful yet sarcastic disposition and love of flying in thunderstorms, much to the dread of the rest of the crew. She likes Orlando enough as a boss, but doesn’t really see him as a romantic prospect, and is the only one on the ship who doesn’t see Orlando’s feelings for her.
Anthony Stewart Head as DR. BARTON
After the death of his wife, Dr. Barton threw himself into his work, fixated on improving the world through his inventions. As such, he and his son didn't have a very close relationship, and Nate knew little of most of his father's work. At the time of his death he was working on a machine that would greatly advance steam technology. When his body was found, the half-built machine and the plans were gone.
Emily Blunt as ELISABETH OF BAVARIA
Elisabeth is the Princess of Bavaria, currently traveling (and sleeping around) Europe in an attempt to escape the boredom of royal life and her family. Currently situated in London, she becomes a friend of Annalise and sometimes uses her connections to help them receive information or get into important places. She admires Annalise’s refusal to take shit from anyone, and is attracted romantically to her, but recognizes the chemistry between Nate and Annalise, even if they can’t. Elisabeth has slept more than once with Quinn, but does not mention this to the main trio, not thinking it important.
Li Gong as LAVERNA
The thief lord of the largest Thieves’ Guild in London, Laverna is ruthless and rules with an iron fist. She is suspicious of everyone, especially the bandits in her guild, all too aware of their true nature. The only person she trusts is Dorian, her second in command. She is an incredibly experienced fighter, having trained in Shanghai for several years before moving to London and slowly moving her way to the top before taking over the Guild. Her turn-ons include knives and whips.
Aidan Turner as DORIAN
Dorian is Laverna’s right hand man. He’s as deadly in battle as Laverna, if not moreso, and is a man of few words, but will speak his mind when necessary. He used to be an assassin in Persia before moving to London with Laverna. Has no qualms about killing a man and also enjoys a good curry.
Ian Somerhalder as BRETT
Annalise’s on-again, off-again boyfriend, Brett is the first person she felt a connection to after joining the Guild. A particularly vicious individual, he has been known to attack other thieves or just random people on the street who are seen interacting with Annalise. He is insanely jealous of Nate when he first sees him, which is part of the reason why, when presented the opportunity, he rats the trio out to Arlington’s men.
(I'm gonna let you think about Olivia Wilde and Ian Somerhalder together for a minute. Yeah.)
Cillian Murphy as JOHN HARPER
Part 1 of a henchmen duo working for Arlington. Harper is a very neat man, has a plan for everything and always cleans up after himself. If his plans don’t go correctly, he usually lets Quinn have his way, which is significantly messier. He keeps a picture of his dead sister in his coat pocket, right next to his favorite gun. He’s often annoyed by Quinn’s methods, but appreciates him as a partner.
James Marsters as SAMUEL QUINN
Quinn is the Yin to Harper’s Yang, incredibly uncouth and improper, he finds that, when on jobs, it’s easier to kill people first and ask questions later. He thinks Harper is a stuck up pain in the ass, but understands that he’s a good fighter who gets things accomplished for the Boss. The duo is greatly feared throughout London.
Gary Oldman as THOMAS ARLINGTON.
Very little is known about Thomas Arlington. We also know that he is the captain of a fleet of Airships. We also know that he doesn’t like to get his hands dirty, preferring to let Quinn and Harper do his work for him, but Arlington is definitely the mastermind behind the killings. Barton’s machine works into his grand scheme somehow, and we also know that the police are extremely concerned about it, which suggests that his plans threaten the empire itself.
IF YOU READ ALL THAT...YOU'RE PROBABLY LYING.
This is what I do with my time. It was really fun to do, I actually researched shit and made it semi-historically accurate (ALL THE DATES MATCH UP, I'M VERY HAPPY ABOUT THAT). I'd recommend trying it out if you feel like it. This entry will stay unlocked for a week. I'd love your comments if you have any! ♥
