I believe that... Theatre is what I really want to major in. That's what I want to be a part of. It's not about being an actor, being in the limelight, being a star (although I like the performance aspect, certainly). But I liked it even just being on the crew of my school's recent production, "Cabaret". I set props in place prior to each performance, I helped my friend put makeup on his back to look like scratches, I ran one of the spotlights during the show, I even served as an usher for two or three of the nights -- taking tickets and handing out programs. I helped finish the stage. Being part of something... bigger. Yeah, one could say it's "just" entertainment, but entertainment is important to people.
One of the assignments for my Introduction to Theatre class this semester was to create a character. Visualize, personality, back story etc. Of course, I drew my character. Later on the same day I turned in my assignment, the teacher took me aside and asked me why I wasn't a theatre major. Told me he thought I would do well in costume design. Based on one picture. Another student around, a senior I believe, who is an.. interdisciplinary major with her focus on theatre and art and I dunno, told me I was good. She looked through my sketchbook. Another student who works in the costume shop of the theatre asked me one night if I had my sketchbook with me because my teacher, who is the scenic/costume/technical director for the production showed her my drawing. My friends tell me I'm good. I tend to take things from them with a grain of salt, though, because... well, they don't draw. But it's a little different coming from my teacher. I'm like "..woah, really?" y'know. I'd never even thought of getting into costume design in the theatre. I.. think there was a time when I was younger when one of my "what do I wanna be when I grow up?" whims was that of a clothes designer anyway. Along with gymnast, actress, musician.. etc etc. haha.
For any other major I would consider... I'd find problems with it. English major? I don't like writing lots. Art Education? I don't wanna take education classes. eheheh... I do want to continue taking art classes as well. Theatre, my main problem is, I've been like my mom in the mindset that theatre (well, communication arts with a focus on theatre) is.. not a major that would really be helpful in life. But that's not necessarily the case, yeah? My dad pointed out that many college students don't even end up in a job for their major. He also told me that I should do something that I enjoy. Something many others have told me as well.
So. Long story short, and barring something occurring to change my mind around and mix me up all over again, I'm most likely going to major in the Communication Arts with a focus in Theatre, and minor in Art. (or graphics design? but probably simply art.)
