Acknowledgements from the book Duplo Fantasia Heroica

I’ve been meaning to write this post for a while, but time has been a tease...

So today I finally got around to it.  Below I have reproduced my acknowledgements from the book: Duplo Fantasia Heroica, published in Brazil last year.  The reason I didn’t get them up sooner is that I wrote them in Portuguese, so I had to take the time to translate them.

So here they are, my homage to all those who are thanked within but will never have a chance to read the book.  They apply in triple now with all the success the novelette has had this year. Thank you all so much!

I wrote these back in October last year, and I already have so many others to thank in #2...

Acknowledgements

The story published within is of my authorship, but it wouldn’t have made it to these pages without the support of many people.

First, I must thank Roberto de Sousa Causo, who had the inspiration for this collaboration one lovely Saturday afternoon in São Paulo.  This project was his “baby” since the start, and I’m very pleased to have been able to make this journey with him.

I’d like to thank Douglas Quinta Reis, for believing in this project and supporting it since the start.

Douglas Cohen and Shawna McCarthy were fundamental, for judging this story worthy of publication in one of the most important fantastic literature magazines in the USA, and in the process launching the names Gerard van Oost and Oludara to the world.

I thank Cory Doctorow for all his support before and after publication.  He made a difference he’ll never know.

To João Amaral, Tiago Castro, and Ana Cris Rodrigues, who helped publicize my first announcement of the series in Brasil.

I thank all the people who offered me critiques of the early versions, from Critters, Zoetrope, and Viable Paradise.  I especially thank Debra Doyle, Banjamin Hall, and Daniel Barrett, whose words inspired me greatly.

To the writers who helped me (and continue to help me) at this beginning of my career: Aliette de Bodard, Tony Pi, Russell Bittner, T. L. Morganfield, Al Bogdan.  And my convention clan: Kim Vandervort, Heather McDougal, Julia Dvorin, Eric Griffith, Jeff Soesbe, Dru Miller, Remus Shepherd, and Beth.

To Jeremy Tolbert, who created the website, and to the artists Paulo Italo, Leonardo Amora, Carolina Mylius, Jonathan “Jay” Beard, and Federico Piatti, whose illustrations give even more life to the characters.

I thank the support above and beyond the call of duty from my great friends Joe Saunders, Leo Carrion, David Riggs, William Wong, Hermann Gartler, and Russ Jackson.  And to the old guard from Southlogic Studios, with whom I learned much about entertainment during eleven years.  And a special thank you to the series followers on eamb.org, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and LiveJournal.

I’d also like to thank the Brazilian community of fantasy readers.  You make this all possible!  I wasn’t born in Brazil, but I chose it, and I hope my passion for the Brazilian people and culture show through in this series.

Finaly, I’d like to thank my entire family, especially my parents for all they did for me in this life, and Fernanda and Lynx, my eternal inspirations.

Porto Alegre, October 2010
