I figured it out!
So, last night I called apple support again and they basically said (paraphrased here) "we're idiots here, you have to go to a genius bar - they be smart". So I basically say screw it and head north. Go to the genius bar and they try it and it works on their ifruit, and can't see why it won't work for me. It worked on their computer in the back room too, which was a pc. I can't argue with that! The weird thing is that I'd had it work once before, and when I got up today it worked. But then it stopped working.... So I'm trying things and I finally figure it out.
If winamp is running, the ipod won't update right.
I've upgraded every driver I have, rewired the usb on the suitcase, everything. And it was something stupid like this. Winamp probably came with some plugin that I can't seem to find which is accessing the ipod when it is plugged in. So it's not the fault of the worst software I've ever used, it was a plugin for among the best. Figure that one out.
Oh, and after going to the apple store, had dinner with Kelly and Nick - it was very nice, and very reasonably priced. They got a kick out of the $2 bills I used for a tip. :)
