2012!

I'm not going to post a 2011 in reflection. It wasn't a good year, though it wasn't a particularly bad year, either. Some good, some bad, some meh.

For New Year's, we went to Key West with Cynthia and Paul, friends from Dubai. They were stateside for the holidays, wanted to see us, but did not want to deal with Michigan in January. So Key West wound up being the place. After a rather "adventurous" night of travel, we finally got to the right motel in Miami and made contact with Paul with a plan of meeting in the lobby in the morning.

In the morning on the 31st, we drove from Miami to Key West. That is a gorgeous drive. The road, Route 1, goes down the Keys, from island to island, ending up in Key West. No trouble finding our hotel, and then we went out and about getting a feel for the place. We hung out at the dock for the sunset which is a nightly celebration in Key West. There were a variety of different acts (tumblers, escape artists, jugglers, sword swallowers, etc.) and carts and booths with crafts and such. Plus the beautiful sunset.

In the evening, we got the hotel's shuttle back downtown, and ate at a Brazilian restaurant, the sort where all sorts of different meats keep coming around for as long as you want to keep eating. Yummy!

We tried to go see the transvestite in the shoe drop (in the same way the ball in Times Square drops at midnight), but the area was crowded in a rather nasty way.

We spent the first leisurely enjoying the island, including a visit to the house Ernest Hemingway lived in when he lived in Key West. He had a number of six-toed cats and their descendents are still roaming the property. There are evidently 44 cats currently in residence.

We drove back to Miami on the 2nd, taking time to stop just before the Seven Mile Bridge to wade in the ocean and take some pics. Pictures are up on my Picasa, and if you want to see them and aren't already linked to me on G+, let me know and I'll toss in a link.

So I also decided what my 365 project is for this year, though it's actually a 366 project since it's a leap year. I'm doing origami cranes. The paper can be significant to the day or interesting in some way. The cranes can be large or small. The location of the crane for the pic can be significant or interesting. But there has to be a new crane each day and there has to be something different about the crane and/or the picture of it. I think this'll work because there's a lot of different ways I can do it, and because it doesn't take long at all to make an origami crane.

I'll be posting those to my Picasa and my Tumblr. If you want to watch and don't already have one of those links, let me know and I'll toss them out.

I'm also going to post a goals/resolutions type of thing dated for the end of 2012, so we'll see if I do any better at it this year than when I've tried such a thing before.
