Computer on the fritz

And yup, Mercury just went retrograde. I forgot to check when the retrograde started and didn't do a backup. So it's been a couple months and there are some files I would be unhappy about losing. Hopefully, they can repair the comp. Hopefully, repaired enough to get another year of usage out of it, but at least enough so that I can be sure to get ( Read more... )

To get any repairs actually done, you have to buy their package. Oh, they give you options, but what those "options" boil down to is buy their package upfront, or you'll wind up spending more money than if you had. Because their standard diagnosis costs $70 and does not including anything about checking for or dealing with viruses. So when it inevitably turns out that no, it wasn't the hardware, it was probably a virus, you then have to pay even more money for them to actually address the problem you told them it was in the first place. And all of this will take more time, of course.

And when I went back to take a gander at netbooks and laptops, they wouldn't just leave me alone, one of them said computer repairs only take two days (when the guy at the repair counter had said a week, maybe), and then when I said I was looking at netbooks started in about how "weak" they are. Also note that they're by far the cheapest things on the floor. No, he wasn't interested in -why- I was looking for a netbook. As in what aspects of the netbook appealed to me. No, it was immediately try to redirect to more expensive items.

And at no time did anyone actually listen to me. Not the repair guy, not any of the three people who wouldn't leave me alone in the computer section. It was all prepared spiels to sell higher priced items.

Ugh, sounds awful. I think I'll stay away. Sorry you had such a miserable experience.

I definitely recommend finding an alternative. I know that it's corporate policy that forces the employees to behave the way they do. If they don't, they'll lose their jobs. And I really hope that that corporate policy bites the corporation in the butt, big time.

Actually, when I went there, I found that various techincians are different. Originally they told me that a house call would be cheaper (!) but when I called to schedule, a local guy said it would be more expensive, and told me where to go and which person to ask for. And they did a good job. But it's clearly the luck of the draw, and I'd rather find someone I can trust.
