End of the Journey for Two Turkeys

Nov 23, 2009 08:33

Yesterday I butchered two turkeys. I thanked them for giving up their lives so that we may live before removing their heads with a sharpened hatchet. Knife work and a huge amount plucking followed.

The two broad-breasted bronze turkeys, whose journey came to an end yesterday:

The oak butcher block where it all came to an abrupt end.

The work table where the knife work and plucking commenced:

Since I did the chopping myself, I obviously couldn't take a photo. Here they are after the chopping:

Another, closer shot. They probably each weighed about 25 lbs.

I let them bleed out for about 30 minutes before I started plucking:

The big one finished off at 19 lbs., while the smaller one finished off at 15 lbs. It was a hell of a lot of work, but totally satisfying.

I so need to make one a whizbang chicken plucker:

So that's it. Two more to go for Christmas.
