Sunday night I was watching Band of Brothers on HBO. It was the ninth show in the series called, “Why we Fight”. It depicts the liberation of a Nazi concentration camp and the horrors found there. Watching made me think of my Uncle Berwyn. He was a veteran of World War II. He was a replacement soldier who wasn't old enough to fight until the end of the war. His unit liberated a concentration camp. His job was to round up the local German citizenry and march them through the entire camp before it was cleaned up to see what they had allowed by omission. He only spoke of this once, that I heard of, it was in the context of refuting a Holocaust denier. He was so pissed, he wished he could have marched the guy through that camp and make him see and smell it for himself.
Yesterday my sister called, before she said anything, I said, “Berwyn passed away.” she said, “yes. Did dad call you?” I told her that I had been thinking about him while watching Band of Brothers . We talked about him and family for awhile. It's sad that the WWII generation is passing, they made a hell of a sacrifice and they never bitched about it.
