A/N: This is kind of plotless. Dialogue-based with lots of Jackson/Ashley banter. This is a preemptive apology for an angsty (yes, angsty) Jashley fic I'm currently writing. It should be up in a few days.

for snitchster. Happy (almost) birthday, bb!

“You just can’t help yourself, can you?”

He distanced the phone from his ear and just stared at it. The screen said Ashley, although he didn’t remember it ringing. He didn’t remember picking it up.

“ …What?”

“Did I wake you? Good.” There was a huff from the other side - supposedly sounding annoyed, yet so gentle that Jackson had to press his lips tightly together to prevent himself from laughing. Ashley continued, “I don’t know what’s worse, your answer or your blushing in front of a gazillion people.”

The haze of just waking up dissipated as that last sentence made its way into his mind.

“How did you find out?”

He could practically hear Ashley roll her eyes.

“We’re part of probably the most stalked cast ever, Jackson. I’ve got my sources.”

“… Oh.”

“Oh, indeed. ‘Sides, there’s a video on youtube.”

Of course there is, he thought. “Well, what did you think?”

“I think ‘nice’ is an understatement. That island would be great.”

“More like, fantastic.”

“Absofreakinlutely amazing.”

“Spectacular.”

“Whatever.”

He was relieved to notice the hint of teasing and amusement in her voice.

“What about the first answer?”

This was what he meant: How did you feel that just by saying your name, I practically outted us and our… something, yet again?

“I don’t care if you did it for stunts or publicity or whatever, if that’s what you mean.” There was a shrug buried in that sentence, somewhere.

“That’s beside the point.”

“You do realize that evil Summit is dancing their bottoms off with this free publicity you pulled for them?”

“It’s still beside the point.” Pffft, Summit, who cares, he thought. “I thought we’re on Rob and Kristen’s side? Whatever happened to ‘Screw Summit, we’ll do whatever we want’?”

“Jackson. It’s different. They freakin’ photoshopped Kristen into a black blob. With us, it’s - they want us to be seen together and… and… be cute and all that. We should be in hiding if we wanted to get back at them.”

“We are together.”

“And you’re such a school girl who just has to tell the whole world about it. Or imply it.”

“Did you mind?"

"Not exactly."

"Did I offend you?”

“What, because you think I’d be the best person to be stranded in an island with? Are you kidding me?”

“You’re not mad?”

“I’m freakin’ flattered, if anything. Stop worrying so much. ”

“You’re the one who should stop worrying what other people think about us. And I love you.”

“That’s not fair.”

“What?”

“You telling me you love me when I’m trying to be all sensible.”

“Sensibleness is overrated, sweet girl.”

There was a long pause. He didn’t know what to expect next, but at least it was safe to say that Ashley wasn’t mad at him; and that was a relief.

“Hey, Jackson?”

“Yeah?”

“You’re too adorable for your own good.”

“At least you didn’t use the word ‘cute’.” He really hated that word.

“Are you blushing now?”

“Nope.”

“I love you. So much. And I wish you were here next to me in my bed so we can do whatever it is you plan to do to me on that island…”

He felt his cheeks burning.

“Your sultry voice should be reserved just for me.”

“You’re so blushing now.”

He didn’t say anything.

“Yeah. I thought so.”

“Are you wearing my T-shirt? Have you been hugging the bear since you found out about my answers?”

She didn’t say anything.

“Yeah, I thought so.”

There was a faint sniffle before she said, “My heart hurts.”

“Because of me? My stupidity?”

“The lack of you. Here. Near me.”

His heart hurt.

“Please don’t cry.”

“Am not crying.” Another sniffle. “I miss you.”

"I miss me, too. I like the me when you're near better than any other version."

She laughed.

"I miss you too, Ash."

"I know."

"Being apart sucks."

"I know."

"Put me on speaker.”

“What?”

“Put me on speaker and put the phone on that pillow next to yours.”

“Okay.”

He put his phone on speaker, too, and put it next to him.

They talked about everything and anything for almost an hour, pretending that they were next to each other. He heard sleepiness lacing her voice, but of course she refused to hang up.

“Close your eyes,” he said.

“I’ve been closing them for the past half hour.”

“And you haven’t fallen asleep yet? Here I thought I was so soothing.”

“Most people would be happy knowing their partner stay awake during a conversation, you know.”

“I’m not most people. Neither are you.”

“True.”

She yawned.

“Ashley, you should sleep.”

“Five more minutes.” Of course, it was never only five minutes.

“No, really, sleep.”

“Force me. Sing me a lullaby if you must.”

So he sprinted across the room, grabbed Annabelle and started strumming. “Which song?”

“Whichever. I’m not going to sleep anyway.”

“Don’t be so sure about that.”

He started singing and by the end of the first verse her breathing was even and steady. He finished the song before calling out her name, almost whispering so that if she were asleep, he wouldn’t wake her up.

“Ash?”

A mumbled response caused him to smile. Not with smugness, but with relief.

“I’m gonna hang up, okay? I’ll talk to you tomorrow.”

“Mmmmh.”

“Sweet dreams, love.”

"Jackson?"

"Yeah?"

"That song was new."

"Yes. It's your song."

"Mmmmh." He heard her smile.

"Mmmmh to you too. Night, Ash."

He waited for a few minutes in silence - making sure that she really was asleep, before hanging up.
