JournalStone’s 2010 Short Story Contest

JournalStone is holding its first contest and is accepting short story submissions for its upcoming 2010 horror anthology publication. The top 10-15 submissions will be chosen for publication. Submissions should be proof-read and edited and in the final format.

All cover art, layout, publication costs, formatting etc., will be JournalStone’s responsibility. As a writer submitting work your only responsibility is submitting your short story.

Genre: Horror/Science Fiction/Mystery. Please keep the stories PG-13 or above. Anything from Steven King to Twilight Zone would be perfect. If you have any questions on content please send an e-mail to christophercpayne@journalstone.com.

Word Count: Approximately 5,000 to 7,500 words. If your story deviates from these guidelines, please contact JournalStone at christophercpayne@journalstone.com.

Submission Deadline: All submissions must be received no later than 11 p.m. Pacific time Sept. 3, 2010. JournalStone highly recommends you submit your work early

To submit your work, please send in a Microsoft Word document in Times New Roman 12-point font to christophercpayne@journalstone.com.

By entering this contest and submitting your short story, you authorize JournalStone to publish your work, hereinafter referred to as “The Work.” Please see below for legal details.

The tentative publication date is Oct. 29 in time for Halloween!

Each applicant with a published submission will receive one free copy of the book in its final form and be given a 40 percent discount from list price on any future orders made directly through JournalStone.

The Author hereby represents and warrants to the publisher that The Work is free and clear of any counts of libel, plagiarism, breach of privacy or misrepresentation of facts. The Work does not infringe upon any copyright or proprietary right, common law or statutory law, and does not contain any material of libelous nature. The work is not in the public domain and the Author is the sole owner and copyright holder of The Work with full power to enter into this agreement. If The Work has been previously published in whole or in part, the Author currently holds all copyrights to The Work and is legally permitted to enter into this agreement. The Author releases The Publisher from any responsibilities relating to any legal actions incurred by the contents of The Work or the The Author. This representations contained herein are true on the date of the submission of said work in regards to the contest listed above.

Rights Granted:

The Author, on behalf of himself/herself and his/her heirs, executors, administrators, successors and assignees, hereby grants, transfers and assigns to The Publisher for the full term of copyright and all extensions thereof including any supplementary materials and revised editions, including but not limited to the right, by itself or with others, through the world, exclusive rights to print, publish, republish, distribute and transmit The Work and to prepare, publish, distribute and transmit derivative works based thereon, in English and in other languages, in all media or expression, digital and print, known or later developed, and to license or permit others to do so. The Publisher’s rights shall include but not be limited to:

(1) The exclusive rights to publish and sell The Work on a worldwide basis. In all countries, territories both foreign and domestic.

(2) Rights in both English and foreign language rights throughout the world.

(3) Periodical or newspaper rights prior to or following book publication, including syndication rights throughout the world.

(4) Print on demand or small print-run technologies.

(5) Non-Dramatic audio recording rights throughout the world

(6) Motion picture, television, radio, stage dramatic and musical rights throughout the world.

(7) Commercial and merchandising rights throughout the world.

Author retains the rights to all characters created in The Work and or the rights to use the characters in any future publications as he/she sees fit.
