Yesterday was the December luncheon/meeting for the DAR. Had a great time. Business meeting, then lunch, then the program. During lunch we were entertained by a chorus of eight young ladies who sang (a capella) Christmas songs. Just lovely. They were high school students from Gig Harbor High school. They produced an excellent sound. The Hot Entree was crisp salad, "holiday ham," tiny carrots, red potatoes, roll, and chocolate pudding. We were at a table with six other members...indulging in polite chit chat. These ladies have lead such interesting lives. As usually happens, the talk included genealogy and research. The Civil War came up in conversation and one lady said she had an ancestor who was with Gen. Sherman on his "march to the sea." I asked her if she was a member of the Daughters of the Union Veterans of the Civil War. Her eyes lit up and her ears twitched...never heard of the group. I told her about the local chapter, of which I am a member, and asked if she would be interested in joining the group and/or be a guest at our next meeting. She accepted. So, a potential member is in the making. The program was by a man who was a member of a group made up of people who were orphans of WW II. His father died on a beachhead in the South Pacific in 1943. An interesting program. At the next table was a woman who had brought her daughter and two granddaughters as guests. I mentioned that I have a granddaughter who will be eligible to join DAR in another 16 1/2 years. Someone asked if I had done her applications papers yet. I said "No". She said it would make an excellent Xmas present. So after I got home, I went to the computer and created and ran off the application papers for Amanda. I have the appllication program in my computer because I was once the Chairman of the Membership Committee. So, Amanda is ready to go. The only document she needs, ia a copy of her birth certificate. All the remaining 8 generations, back to her Patriot, have already been proved by the application papers for her mother and grandmother (me). I have also made known to Amanda's Mom, that after I pass away, Amanda is to receive my DAR pin. When Alexander was born, I wrote out a genealogy chart for him and gave his Mom a complete set of documents so he can apply for membership in the Sons of the American Revolution when he is old enough to join. (and IF he is interested.) I want them both to know they have inherited a "goodly heritage." Our Patriots name is Mannan Hill. He was a sergeant in the Virginia Militia. We have another documented Patriot, Frederick Fulkerson, who donated beef and corn to the Virginia Militia. They are both on my Mon's side of the family. There is another Patriot, on my Dad's side, but I'm still documenting him. The only thing I'm lacking is the marriage certificate for my grandparents to prove this line.
