More Press Problems for the Rom

Aug 28, 2008 07:04

So it seems the educational process will never end.  Even those who should know better, don't.

This rant is brought to you courtesy of the Press.  Yes, my friends, they have been annoying me once again.  But what else is new and what can you expect when journalists think they know all about the Romani.  Here's my latest complaint.

In articles reviewing Madonna's latest tour, Sticky and Sweet, the press explains how the concert is divided into four acts, the third act being "Gypsy".  That's ok, because that is actually what it is called. Improper, since Madonna should know better, but that is her option.  She has only being hanging out with Rom bands the past two years and still refers to them as her "Romany Gypsy friends" which is like saying "Look at the baby piglet." Use one or the other. I digress.

The articles describe the scene as Madonna on stage with Romanian musicians playing folk music.  They are Romani musicians playing Romani music.  I guess the press couldn't figure the press release out. I can see it now.  "Romani music?  Must be a typo. We'd better fix it ourselves rather than look into the fact that 'Romani' might be accurate."

I've spoken to the musicians themselves and they are not pleased.  Whenever a Rom does something to raise himself up, it needs to be broadcast. The Romani need positive role models and they need to use those role models to show to the world that the stereotypes are wrong.

The Romani are a vibrant people, doing what they can to get by.  The least the press can do is give them the credit they deserve.
