Typically someone in your office is the coordinator and they work with the charity to arrange all of the registrations and donations. Also check and see if your employer has a program in place to support charities. My company does and it works in two ways:

(1) company pays for registration fee and/or contributes minimum donation required

and/or

(2) company matches any donations I get privately

I'm not knocking the run for the cure but it is a hugely supported event and as a runner it is incredibly crowded. There are a ton of runs for charity, just look at The Running Room website.

Another event I would highly recommend is The Underwear Affair. It specifically targets cancers below the waist. One of our employees was diagnosed with cervical cancer and her colleagues and managers (me too) formed a team to enter the run/walk. We a great time, it is a fun event and the company fully sponsored our 300 per person minimum donation requirement. Over and above the 3000 the 10 person team got corporately we raised another 3000 privately which the company also matched. So in the end we raised 9000 between 10 of us.

A lot of these charities will also send a volunteer to your office to help with fund raising ideas, sign up and general spirit type stuff.

Do know that if you decide to propose this to your employer you will be the obvious choice to coordinate =)
