This story is so beautiful. Not a no divorce!au, not a happy ending for Charles and Erik, but a very realistic ending for the both of them. Charles feeling that he had to do what he must, doing the right thing even if it goes against the person he perhaps cared most for in the world, and Erik feeling betrayed by that very person by allowing himself to trust. Just so wonderfully written. Are you considering continuing this?

That's so kind of you to say, and I'm really happy that you liked this, but no, I'm probably not going to write any more of this. Anyway, thank you so much!

Aw man, everyone's been writing these gut-wrenching 'fics at the moment, and this one is a wonderful addition to that glut. It could go in the more predictable, comfortable direction of Charles, of course backing down as he always does and letting Erik's dreams continue to rage, and then it's something else entirely, and it's terrible and sad and wonderful because of how heartbreaking it really is. I read something once where Erik wakes up in the cell they hold him in after "X1" and Charles is all, "they said I helped you build it" (it's an AU where they're their "FC" counterparts traveling into the future), and this reminded me of that. Charles is basically doing the wrong thing for the right reasons, and I think it really kind of kills him to have to. Lovely piece!

Well, the last fic I wrote featured, you know, vaguely cheerful elements, and obviously I had to counter that with some pain and misery.

I'm so glad you enjoyed this, thanks for commenting.

Ha ha, we always have to balance out the vaguely cheerful 'fic output with like, GUT WRENCHING SADNESS, or the world will not continue to spin properly on its axis or something. Thanks for writing this! :D
