He'd taken to spending the evenings after supper out in the courtyard, gazing out over the plain leading to the Narnian woods. Caspian the Tenth, rightful king, vented a quiet sigh as he watched the shadows lengthen across the landscape. He loved this land, the people and creatures inhabiting it, and was more than glad that they were all on the road to peace and restoration.
In fact, such was a purpose for this quiet time alone, away from all distractions. His sketchbook lay cross his lap; he'd been working on a few sketches for the rebuilding of the beautiful Cair Paravel, the castle far to the east, sitting on its high cliff overlooking the sea. But this evening, he'd not been of a mood to continue working; he was instead quite content to simply gaze over the lush grassland and let his thoughts wander deep into the magical woods, recalling their soft whispers and hidden treasures.
A gentle step some distance behind him broke the reverie and Caspian started, glancing over a shoulder to see Telfonus just disappearing back into the castle. The young king shook his head with a smirk; the newly appointed general-of-staff was proving to take his duties quite seriously; Caspian was forever tripping over the man. But he indulged; the safety and well-being of the King was, after all, Telfonus' primary duty.
Yet the sun was fading; it would soon be too dark to sketch, so Caspian settled a bit more comfortably on the stone bench, set his back against the tree and picked up his sketchbook once more, determined to see this dream a reality.
[notes: I just made Telfonus up, since I figure the King would have at least one aide who always keeps an eye on him. And sorry about the length; I'm a narrative writer at heart and sometimes it gets away from me. But feel free to intrude; I'm cool with AUing, bumbadum, whatevs. Go nuts, kids. -Em]
