I'm seriously not that smart, in many ways - primarily all things pop culture, current events and politics.  I just tend to be WAY behind, but anyways...here's my brain today ( Read more... )

I think in some states, adultery IS illegal.

I love Big Love, too, and I am utterly fascinated by how their family works. I feel like, in those circumstances, where they are all consenting adults and all agree to the circumstances, it isn't necessarily something that should be illegal (and it should be able to go both/all ways - one wife with multiple husbands, or any other combination that is desired and agreed upon). But unfortunately, I think most FLDS sects, where the majority of the polygamy is happening, are breaking so many other laws, like you mentioned, that the polygamy itself is the least of their concerns, not to mention that those relationships are not generally consensual and are not always between adults.

i agree with the above comment, that polygamy as practiced in the FLDS seems to be to me more of an excuse to dominate and control women and girls, and to have as many children as possibe, than it is an expression of consentual and freeing love between adults. It is not in any way permitted for the women, and you are right, there are lots of other laws being broken as well. I still think adultry is a different beast, because for me it not so much about the acts happening outside the marriage as it is the lying about it. But adultry is not against the law, at least in Illinois.
