The Citygent would love to review MW2
To whit, the Citygent will not be purchasing Modern Warfare 2 for the following reasons:
To play this game, I'll have to download Steam, an online registration system that will have to run in the background, not just when I'm playing the game, but all the time.
If I want to access my email, it'll have to go through Steam first. If I want to open and then read an email, it'll have to go through Steam first.
If I want to play World Of Warcraft then it has to go through Steam first.
If I want to download a PDF about my piles and how to cure the issue with prunes, then it has to go through Steam first.
If I want to do a Google search for what's on TV tonight, it has to go through Steam.
If I turn off Steam, it doesn't actually turn off. It sits in the background, ticking away and occasionally saying that programs aren't permitted.
It's like herpies. You think it's gone away, but it comes back and ruins everything.
Not only is that intrusive and absurdly 1984 of Activision, the publishers of Modern Warfare 2, but it's also a big insult. They assume that you need to be controlled because you must be a software pirate. You're not on a console, which means your hardware is open, so therefore you must be out of control.
Console = Control (for the next 12 months, maybe)
It also kills my online connection for anything that isn't Steam.
Secondly, there are no multiplayer servers. In order to play the game PvP, I have to connect to someone elses PC in the hope that they have a good connection. What if you set up a server purely to run Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer? Tough. You have to connect to some guy in Germany, or Greece, and hope that your ping rate does ok. Which means your screwed.
So there's no multiplayer. There's no playing the game single player unless you want to kill all your online applications during the process.
I hear the graphics are good.
Like I give a shit. I'd rather be able to use my computer. Avoid COD Modern Warfare 2. Play something else - there's a lot to choose from
Dragon Age: Origins - a great D&D based game with longevity for continous fantsy based gameplay
Borderlands - Cartoony FPS shoot-em-up with an RPG bent. Highly rated on Boing Boing.
Fallout 3 - I've been told again and again to play this. Another FPS with an RPG bent. Apparently this set the standard up until 6 months ago, which is sayin summat
COD 2 - Old School but this game is still awsome and deserves a lot of respect. This and COD4 Modern Warfare are both the best online multiplayer FPS games going.
Bioshock 2 - If your graphics card can keep up, this is a monster, monster game.
Football Manager 2010 - not my style but I hear it's going to be a marriage breaker.
Batman: Arkham Asylam - It worked on PS3. PC version doesn't hate you.
Left 4 Dead - Play it now. I hear the new Left 4 Dead 2 is gonna be Steam powered, also.
If you don't have a console and want to have a gaming weekend after the Mrs has gone to bed, do not, DO NOT buy Modern Warfare 2.
If you do have a console, good for you. In the words of Taff - If you're playing console, you're not a serious gamer.
Regrettably, publishers no longer want serious gamers.
Buy any of the games above and enjoy. Anything that involves installing Steam, avoid like the Black Plague. Really.
