[Kain has no idea that the below part was meant to be private. He's always surprised by his friend's continued trust in him, after everything they've been through.]

[ Cecil is surprised to see Kain actually saw his message for S.A.M.M., but he's nonplused by the subtle questionining of his resolve. When he replies, there's a bit of a challenge in his voice. ]

Why would I ask if I was not certain? Unless you would prefer to be left alone, which I will respect.

[Cecil is still his friend regardless of anything else, after all. But Kain had good reason for going off alone to Mount Ordeals, back in their world. That Darkness within him... it's still there. He fears what could happen if it ever lashed out at Cecil.]

I only hope that I won't do anything to ruin your faith in me.

[ The paladin smiles warmly and nods to his friend in acknowledgement. And also perhaps with a little relief and gratitude. He's aware that others, like Edge, wouldn't think he's doing anything smart or even safe, but Cecil doesn't see it that way. ]

Zemus cannot reach you here, Kain. Only you have control over that now.

...I would still recommend that you remain wary. We don't know what these others of foreign worlds are capable of.

[Kain Highwind fears nothing. ...except being controlled again. That's almost constantly on his mind, especially with that darker self in him, deep down and locked away for now but always waiting...]

[ Cecil shakes his head and his smile fades, the expression replaced with one of determination. He was hurt by what Kain had done and, in truth, he could have just as easily chosen not to trust the dragoon ever again, but losing one of his two most valuable and pivotal friendships has never seemed worth allowing his secret fears control over his actions. He vowed he would never be a coward again and he intends to make good on that oath he took on Mount Ordeals. ]

I promise I will not let you fall to anyone's manipulation again. You can trust me. You know that, right?

[Nor does Kain want to lose that friendship, for all that he's tried to push away, and tried to distance himself. The jealousy he bears toward him is something he knows he must still fight off. For his own sake as much as Cecil's.]

I trust you with my life. And for what it's worth... while my mind is my own, I promise that I'll do all I can to defend you, in turn.

[ And just like that, Cecil considers them well on their way back to being as good and as close a pair of best friends as they used to be, before everything with Zemus happened. ]
