Characters: Iruka and Naruto
Location: Ichiraku Ramen
Time: Dinnertime. 30 March, according to Nicole's reconing, as it is the night after Sasuke gets his bike MOT'd. And the night before that SasuNaru fight. I was slow posting this because I had better things to do in America then clean logs. Not so in Japan! HAHAHAHAHA!
Summary: Naruto and Iruka eat ramen. And talk about stuff. Guy stuff. Or something
Warnings: Obscene amounts of cuteness. Other then that? Nada
Naruto It was cool out in the city, and after closing up the garage for the night (usually, Naruto was open pretty late, but not tonight), Naruto changed out of his coveralls into his usual orange and black. He'd promised Iruka-sensei that he'd meet him at the ramen shop, and it was just. . . chance that it coincided with his meeting with Sasuke.
Naruto had a tradition--before any fight/mission, he had to have ramen. Something that had started with his master (crazy pervert had some good ideas), and he'd just kept doing it. Naruto always wanted his last meal to be ramen. Not that Sasuke would be able to hurt him, nono. Just that he liked ramen, and it was a tradition. And Naruto couldn't break tradition (he was a little superstitious).
Entering the shop, he looked around, then waved as he saw the familiar brown hair of his former teacher. "Iruka-sensei!"
Iruka Iruka turned around from the counter and smiled at his former student as he waved him over, Naruto had already been fourteen the first time he had met him, but it was still hard for Iruka to imagine how he had gotten so tall, to concieve that someone had gone from being a kid to being a man in the years he had been teaching. Iruka hardly looked like himself today, he was taking the evening off after teacher training in the gym, and as a result he looked uncomonnly relaxed, dressed down to jeans and a t-shirt. He gestured to the chair beside him. "Naruto, have a seat."
Naruto "Heh heh, thanks, sensei," he said, hoping into the seat next to Iruka. "You look like a human being for a change, not a teacher! Did you have a day off? Or was it a holiday and I forgot. . . " If it had been a holiday, then he could have closed the shop--not that he would have, he needed the money--but then would Sasuke have come? His brow furrowed in thought. He was pretty sure it wasn't a holiday. . . And Sasuke would have come, he was an ass who would have come just to harass Naruto on what should have been a holiday, making comment about how poor Naruto was.
Iruka Iruka laughed. "Like a human being?" he repeated. "teachers are subhumanm huh?" He shook his head. "Taking the night off of my part time job, because the teaching ran over today. Besides. I could use the break, once in a while. Small world, running into you here." Of course it wasn't a case of it being a small world, it was a case of Iruka telling Naruto in blog posts he would meet him.
Naruto "Yeah, yeah, part time work. You teachers get paid good money, you don't need a part time job, yeah?" Naruto glanced at the menu that he really didn't need (he was here just as often as Iruka--hot, cheap food that he didn't need to cook himself, score!), and waved down a waitress to order (Ayame-neechan wasn't working! Naruto was a little sad). "Miso ramen!" he said, ordering. He turned back to Iruka. "Yeah, I said I'd meet you. Ran a little late though, working on a car. . . "
Iruka "And exactly how much do you think teachers make?" Iruka actually was feeling a little poor. He had said a night off, but he hadn't taken any missions on all month, and it was probably time he did. He shook his head "Looks like everyone has overtime, eh? Something complecated? Did you get it fixed at least?" Iruka didn't have a good grasp on cars, but he asked Naruto anyway.
Naruto "Well, that basta--err, that guy, Sasuke came yo my shop," said Naruto, playing with the noodles in his bowl. "He wanted his bike inspected, and princess couldn't wait so I had o do it while he was still there. Which was a pain, cause I wanted to finish the car sooner, but oh well. . . nothing too complicated on the car. Just changing some parts and fixing things to make it run a little nicer."
Iruka "Sasuke? Uchiha Sasuke?" Iruka had somehow mananged not to teach him outside of a study hall, but Naruto had mentioned him before. Iruka had been glad to hear him drop out of thier conversations. He was not pleased to hear his comeback. "He probably just wanted to be sure there was nothing serious wrong with it. Us lay people don't always know the differnce" he said.
Naruto "Well, that and his royal highness needed to get it inspected for the yearly check ups. Don't want to get pulled over for out of date tags," he said, slurping up some noodles. "He was being kind of a dick too--sorry sensei, that's the truth of it, didn't mean to offend--and tried to start a fight in my shop." Naruto didn't mention that he'd avoided said fight by pushing it back. "Anyway, yeah, no problems now. At least the car's work is done. And Sasuke tips well."
Iruka A fight? Iruka had to force down the urge not to ask for details or say anything about how good it was that Naruto had avoided it. It would just egg him on to start one later if he knew anything about Naruto, but he must have avoided it or they would have both ended up in the hospital. "Sounds more interesting than videos on disipline in the gym anyway." he said, pushing around the bean sprouts in his own bowl.
Naruto "Videos on what? Where? Sensei, you need to get out more," said Naruto. "Ask some cute young teacher out before you're too old to enjoy it!" Naruto laughed and slurped up more ramen. "You should try watching movies at a movie theater. At least then you'll be watching something up to date."
Iruka Iruka laughed "I get out plenty. Just last week I was out at the landromat." He scrached his chin "though now that I think of it the people in the video did have teased hair and leg warmers."
Naruto Naruto stared blankly at his former teacher. "Sensei, the laundromat is not getting out," said Naruto. "And teased hair is just. . . ahh. You know, I have some dvds you can borrow if you're that desperate for entertainment. I mean, like, with explosions that don't look like they were done by kindergardeners. Unless you have Die Hard. That was pretty good, for an older movie." (Wherever Naruto's mind was, it was not on the actual conversation, but on his own variation of it.)
Iruka Iruka laughed again. "Well I wasn't watching them for fun, Naruto, I was watching them because everyone on staff had to. But I probably shouldn't be watching you movies, even if they do have good explosions. I probably should get back to working really. Does that count as getting out?" He asked, slurping his own noodles as he waited for an answer.
Naruto "Ahh, depends on the work," said Naruto. "I mean, when I work, I sit in my garage and tweak my car. So that's not really getting out. What so you do? Tweak lesson plans? Maybe you shouild try doing that at a library or a cafe or something. Try and meet people."
Iruka "Well right now I am at a ramen shop." Iruka said. His mind went back to Naruto and Sausuke and he couldn't help but let the worry cross his face. "There is a lot of trouble to be found in this city." he said.
Naruto "Yeah," said Naruto, slurping up his noodles. "You should be careful, Iruka-sensei. I mean, who would I eat ramen with if you were hurt? I'd be lonely." His words were earnest, perhaps hitting a little closer to the truth of things then he'd like to admit.
Iruka "Don't sweat about that. I can take care of myself." Iruka said. "It wasn't me I was worrying about."
Naruto "Haha, sure you can, sensei," said Naruto, finishing the noodles in the bowl. "But if you ever get into serious trouble, let me know." Naruto gave the older man a big smile. "I'll help you out."
Iruka "And what makes you think a pipsqueak like you could help me out?" Iruka asked, reaching over to mess up his former students already messy hair. He reached for Naruto's check "you can't eve handle your own ramen bills."
Naruto "Hey now," said Naruto, laughing and half-heartedly batting Iruka's hand away from his head. "You're just nice enough to pay for them! And I can handle a lot more then you'd realize."
Iruka "Yeah I know." Iruka admitted, as he picked up his bill as well and reached for his wallet. "So are we going? or are you just waiting to order your second helping
Naruto Naruto laughed, and slurped up the broth. "No, I'm good. I just wanted to see you, sensei," he said. "Thanks for the snack though."
Iruka Iruka waited and watched Naruto finish his broth before he stood up and walked to the register to pay. When he had handed over the money he smiled at the young man as he put his wallet away. "Stay out of trouble. We'll have ramen again soon, ok?"
Naruto "Oh course!" said Naruto. "I won't get into too much trouble, Iruka-sensei. Promise." Jiraiya would get angry with him if he did. "And you go out and have a date or something, okay?"
Iruka "Right." Iruka agreed. Who was he going to ask out on a date? Naruto had crazy ideas. "Goodnight." he added, one more time, and stepped out onto the street to start home.
