Series: Dollhouse
Character: Dr Claire Saunders
Timeline: Season 1, before 'Spy in the House of Love'.
Personality:
Claire suffers from a wide-range of phobias, such as crowds, people, sunlight, open spaces, noise and pets. She has not left the Dollhouse since she was attacked by Alpha, who she is absolutely terrified of. To the point of denying the possibility of him being alive.
She does not go outside. She does not do anything that would possibly result in her leaving the Dollhouse, leaving her charges, not caring for the Actives. Those that volunteer their...services to the Dollhouse.
While she opposes the Dollhouse and things like it, she does not deny that there is some benefit to the service that they provide. She often pushes those in charge to do more pro-bono work. The fact that what they do can be used to repair or even completely cure severe psychological damage is a bonus to her.
Every single thing she does, every fiber of her being is dedicated to protecting the actives (or anyone else she cares for) and keeping them safe and healthy. She's the one most likely to object to something based solely on how it will endanger one of her 'charges'.
She is ethical and moral. She is also completely and totally broken thanks to both programming, design and circumstances.
Background:
Doctor Saunders was a fairly genial man in his late fifties, early sixties. Caretaker of the Dollhouse Actives, the volunteers who come to work for the Dollhouse for five years in exchange for whatever problem in their life that they are avoiding just...going away. His treatment of the 'dolls' differed from that of the rest of the staff in both ethics and morality.
Meaning that he had both ethics and morality.
Whiskey was an active, the most requested and most popular of the LA dollhouse. In paired engagements, she was usually teamed up with another active known as Alpha. She liked Doctor Saunders, and she liked it when he gave her lollipops.
Alpha, an Active left over from the trials that used prisoners as 'volunteers', had recently started having glitches with his programming and decided that Whiskey shouldn't be so popular. That another active by the name of Echo should be.
He slashed Whiskey's face with a pair of pruning shears during one of their post-engagement relaxation treatments.
After that, he was taken to be wiped and put in the Attic, a sort of living computer made up of the minds and bodies of broken dolls and people that the Dollhouse had decided were untrustworthy. Instead of this happening, however, he suffered a composite event.
Every single personality he'd ever been imprinted with was dumped in his head at once. Of course he went insane. Instantly insane, and he then proceeded to slaughter many of the dollhouse staff members, including Dr Saunders, and a great deal of the other actives before finally escaping.
Whiskey was much too scarred and damaged to continue working as an active, so it was decided that she should be imprinted with the skills and modified memories of the deceased physician.
Some of the alterations to the original Saunders personality included memories related to gender difference and computer skills beyond those of a physician. Enough that she can hack the Dollhouse's computer databases when neccessary.
Topher Brink, the lead programmer of the LA Dollhouse over-emphasized Dr Saunders' morality and ethics for the benefit of the other actives. Attempting, in a way, to create his polar opposite. Someone mature enough to see the flaws in his work, someone who cares about what he's doing.
He also programmed her to be repelled by his scent, to prevent her being attracted to him, and from this point, she began to develop a general sort of dislike of Topher Brink.
Abilities/Additional Notes:
Claire was imprinted as a medical doctor, given the skills of a physician and the ability to perform any medical procedure an Active may conceivably require. Up to and including brain surgery. She's also fairly proficient at computer programming.
Coming from where she is in the show's timeline, she has no idea that she was an Active herself.
She is physically scarred. Three scars on the right side of her forehead that run from top-right towards her nose. One on the left of her forehead that runs left to right across her eyebrow. One hat runs left to right across her nose and down into her cheek, and the last one that runs vertically from her left nostril down across her lips to her chin.
Sample Journal Post:
Hell is other people. Insanity is repetition. People are the sum of their memories. A little cliche, sure, but that doesn't make these things any less true. But I wonder.
Is it any less hellish to be alone for all eternity?
Is it any less insane to change your ways, to change your routine? To be completely different for a day?
If you removed one of your memories, one or more of them...would you be any different? Would you be a completely new person? Are you really just the sum of your memories? If you changed one little thing, one little memory, who would you be?
Sample RP:
It was hard. Being here. Not being in the Dollhouse. It was hard. Being outside, being in a new house, being around people she didn't know. Being around Topher so much, being around the girl. It was insanely hard, and she didn't know how to handle it.
Everything was different here, harder here. Stranger here. There were so many different people, so many different things. So much to see and do and watch and listen to. It was almost suffocating. No.
It was suffocating. She'd spent her entire first night here completely convinced that this was some sort of trick or that Alpha would crawl out from under her bed to claw her face back up or that something even more insane would happen.
She wasn't sure she could stand it here at all. She wasn't one bit sure.
