It's been a month since the move, and I'm gradually getting settled in to my new life and a new routine, which also means a return to fangirling. I realized I really hadn't played any sort of video game since a "delightful" trip to the DMV in February (so much fun, I got to go back the next day! 9_9), so it was fun to pick up Pokemon X, change into my favorite outfit (eee, my character is so cute! I kinda want to draw fanart of her, lol ^^;), and visit with my adorable Poke-pals. I've also been unpacking a ton of boxes from the old storage locker, mostly so I could do this:
Whelp, there it is, my entire collection of manga and anime DVDs, all in one place for the first time. That's a lot of Sailor Moon (and almost as much Ranma!), conveniently located for bedtime browsing (awwwww, yeah!). My "real" reading right now is "The Three Musketeers," which isn't as good as "Count of Monte Cristo," but it's still a decent adventure. Less than 200 pages to go at this point, and then I figure I'll start
this-- women, adventure, travel, history? Double aw yeah :3
The houseplants are on their way to recovery after being almost frozen to death during the move. Bonus (fern/tree combo that shares a pot) lost a lot of leaves but is stable and growing new fern... things, and while Porthos the pathos (plant #2... I forgot, that's actually been its unofficial name for a while, so it might as well be official now!) lost almost all its leaves and had its little stems frozen, but after lots of water and some surgery it's sprouting new shoots now and should (eventually) grow to its former tangled-vine splendor. Whew!!
Hmm, I've heard of crazy cat ladies, but crazy plant ladies... am I the first of my kind? XD
Haven't had a lot of time for watching things. Before vacation, I had been doing an Utena rewatch (and following along with an
excellent episode-by-episode analysis on the series), so I'd like to get back into that while the subtle details of the show are still relatively fresh. At least I'm all caught up on Sailor Moon Crystal-- still not *loving* it, but I think that has a lot to do with the manga, which SMC is still resolutely following almost beat-for-beat. The truth is, the manga is much better suited to the page, and the original anime is much better suited to the screen (and makes some plot/character changes that work SO WELL), so when you make a new anime based on the manga it... kinda ends up being inferior to both. Those poor Ayakashi sisters... Sapphire... I shed tears for the lack of complexity you're being given T-T Though it IS nice to see Asanuma animated-- he's a cutie, and I kind of wish he had a bigger role in the story outside of the Black Moon arc (coughcoughCONSTANTLY WORSHIPPING THE GROUND AT JUPITER'S FEET... oh, sorry, had something stuck in my throat there!)-- it also looks like they cut out Unazuki? Aw, phoo.
Also, my husband got me watching "Game of Thrones," which I'm weirdly hooked on. Just started season three, if that means anything to anyone. I don't know anything about the books and the constant barrage of gratuitous boobs and blood isn't normally my cup of tea, but there are a lot of characters in a complex world that intersect in strange and intriguing ways, which is enjoyable enough, and there are a lot of interesting and influential women (who don't seem to die nearly as often as the men; if this keeps up, there won't be any male characters left!), so that's been an interesting diversion. In terms of what my next anime should be: well, I keep hearing good things about "Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun," and I still have to finish "Oreimo," but... this being the Year of the Monster Show, I don't want to spread myself too thin (whoop, there's that "fandom inertia" rearing it's head again... ^_^;)
Been cooking a fair bit too. Our new kitchen is nice, but somewhat unforgiving (granite countertops and tile floors-- drop anything and it's gone for good! DX). The combination of learning to use a gas stove and having water boil at a higher temperature than what I'm used to means I've burned a bit of rice, but I'm learning. We found a pretty decent international market so we've already tried our hand at recreating some Thai dishes... I think we're going to have to go to a Thai market (which totally exists out here, SCORE!) to do some of the stuff we really want to do (THAI STICKY RICE, you guys, it's really good!), but at least they have cheap produce. The state of Mexican food is pretty dire out here, which is unfortunate, but not surprising. We're going to be experimenting at home on that front too. And I made
bubble tea for the first time today-- that was fun, but I think I'm gonna pre-soak the tapioca next time, and stir more-- the pearls ended up being pretty inconsistenly cooked!
Aaaand been going to the gym a lot, and went to a meeting of the Board Game Club at work. Making friends, meeting nerds-- and whoa, there's a girl in my group that makes her own chainmail(?!!)-- these are all good things, but it's still something I need to be more proactive about. Well, it's still a work in progress. No one at work has said anything about my Pokemon pencil case yet, but my boss has Tintin covers framed and hanging on his office wall-- I think that sort of geekery is OK around here :)
