The cat is back

A little while back, I wrote about a friendly neighborhood cat that came around and tried to befriend me.

I didn't see her around for a bit, but now she's back. She definitely belongs to one of the neighbors--I've seen her with them. And she has a collar on now, which is good. She's getting increasingly friendly. The other day, she discovered she can jump up on one of the window ledges and look in at my cats. Today, I went outside to get the mail, and she was at the far end of the block. As soon as she saw me, she came running over, the bell on her collar jingling. It took some gentle maneuvering to get her out of the way so I could close the front gate, but then she just jumped right over it and followed me to my front door.

She's the most affectionate and friendly cat I've ever met. I'm trying not to handle her too much, because I don't want to expose my indoor-only cats to any fleas or illnesses. But I've had to give in and pet her a little bit, because she adores the attention.

I worry about her a little bit. She's very small--maybe only a few months old. And I have to wonder if she's well-suited to being outside as much as she is. Maybe she loves it, I don't know. But she's very affectionate and trusting, and doesn't seem all that independent. I think she would have tried to run into my house today if I hadn't stopped her.

My cats don't know what to make of her. They've both watched her from the window, and they're curious but cautious. They don't see many cats coming into the yard.
