The problem with earplugs is that I still need to hear the alarm. It's true that the alarm clock is much closer and louder, but there'd be some experimentation involved in finding out whether I can still be roused from sleep with earplugs in. Of course, this whole thing happened only an hour or so before the alarm was set to go off and I could've just got out of bed and done something useful instead of lying there, trying to ignore the world, finally falling asleep again, being groggy because of the alarm pulling me out.

Do you want my alarm clock for the deaf? It shakes the bed. I got it in the hope that the vibrating bed would prevent me from crawling back in and going to sleep again, but it didn't work out that way. It turns out that the thing makes such a horrible noise that I just jerked it out of the wall and then went to sleep again. If you think you could get some use out of it, I'll give it to you.

I'd probably just use "be quiet" instead of "pipe down".
