The city approached quietly. A calmness engulfed the airplane as the serene wings graces over the once turbulent skies. Only minutes ago we could see spiral clouds of a hurricane beneath us. Well, the others could see it- I was asleep. But when the winds were calm I woke, as if the stillness could shake me like a mother her teenage boy, sleeping in- 10 minutes late for school. As the city approached, it felt like I was returning home. No, I had never visited New York before, yet the city was ingrained into every cell of my subconscious. Decades of modern popular media had made this place familiar to citizens of lands on the other side of the globe, and to those of us in the United States, it's almost a part of us. Suddenly I realized why the events of 2001 hurt so deeply.
The plane landed, the taxi took us from Queens to Manhattan. A forest of tombstones led the way into the city. And yet it was anything but forboding. As we crossed the bridge and made our way through the first skyscrapers, I forgot was nature was. There was no room for it here. If the tombstones were a forest then the city itself was an ocean of concrete. You could not escape the sheer lack of God's world. This was man's world now.
I can't say what I did exactly. The 5 days went by so fast. Even though I was seeing everything for the first time, it was like I was reading from the pages of my favorite book- I knew the words before my eyes reached them. Of course walking through times square or central park can not be justly captured by a camera lens.
The shows at night were spectacular. Wednesday- Viva Voce, Aqueduct, and John Vanderslice. Thursday- New Pornographers and Dungen. Friday- Skeleton and the Girl Faced Boys. On Wednesday I had a few beers and nearly passed out on the subway. The phrase "let's leave dave here" woke me up. Friday was a conference on bob dylan. Patti Smith did a couple covers. The new documentary by Martin Scorcese was then played. Incredible.
Greenwich Villiage and ground zero were probably the most memorable experiences of my life. For very different reasons.
We left the city in a shower of confetti.
The sky was gold as the clouds passed beneath.
