Well, it had to happen sometime. I saw the Guillemots and they were...rather disappointing, actually. The size of the venue and their obvious boredom with the material led to a rather lacklustre, workaday performance bereft of their normal exuberance or Fyfe's trademark showmanship. The set was bizarrely weighted towards B-sides and new songs (I reckon a good two-thirds of the set were made up of these), which for an ardent fan like me was a bit of a treat (some of the new stuff is very promising) but damn, it wasn't half an atmosphere-killer. It didn't help either that due to a complex series of events, I ended up in the circle rather than the stalls- and I am certainly not a man designed for sitting at gigs. Still, it had it's good points. Songs from 'Through The Windowpane' were the definite standouts- their performance of 'Redwings' was the best I've seen them do; 'Trains To Brazil' and 'Sao Paulo' were as joyous as ever. But compared to the sheer brilliance of the KCL show in December, this was really a bit of a letdown. Ah well, you can't win them all.
