Just how many times do they have to conduct such surveys?

Please don't make it sound like people are so happy to work till they die. The title should be changed to "About half of older Singaporeans Need to Work for as Long as they can".

What to do? Old people lost hard earned money, government also refuses to help. No pension, high electricity ( Read more... )

Surveys and Statistics can be tweaked to draw any conclusion the perpertrators want. Do old people enjoy working ? Maybe a handful - but certainly it is a stretch of the imagination to say that half of the aged love to work.

We have no way to determine,a priori, how the survey questions were couched. The results are surreal and go agasint the grain of common sense.

Perhaps, I can suggest a better reason for old people being forced to work , ie, bcos of the huge, and ever widening income gap.

Let me c+p what i read in the net on the payscales.

President Nathan Basic Salary - S$3,187,100 (24.9% increase)

Prime Minister's Basic Salary - S$3,091,200 (25.5% increase). This is US$2.04 million, or about five times more than U.S. President George W. Bush, who currently takes home US$400,000

Senior Minister - S$3,043,300 (13.5% increase) or US$2.01 million.

Minister Mentor - S$3,043,300 (13.5% increase) or US$2.01 million

Deputy Prime Minister - S$2,452,500 (18.8% increase) US$1.62 million.

Minister and Senior Perm Sec - S$1,593,500 (32.5% increase) or US$1.06 million

Entry Superscale Grade - S$384,000 (3.3% increase)

Member of Parliament - S$216,300 (23.2% increase)

Average Singaporean: S$43,104 (or S$3,592 per mo)
US$26,000
Source: Singapore Ministry of Manpower

The poorest 10% in Singapore earn S$3,600 per annum, or S$300 a month.

Welfare payments to the needy S$290 a month

Now put your hand on your heart and tell me whose story you believe - me or the ST.

i agree with you on the stats. It really depends on how they want to tweak the figures and how they post the questions. I think we also need to add some extra income to the father and son because they were recently awarded $900k for their defamation suit.

Actually, by paying our Ministers extremely high wages is a wrong move. How do you expect someone who earns a million per year to empathise the poor? I really wonder.
