This video has the worst dancing ever! I hope it's intentionally bad.

Oh yeah, the comic...

Final Crisis #2

Well, I am still not packing my things and moving into the Final-Crisis-is-the-most-Awesome-Thing-Ever camp like other people, but this issue has moved me a little into the Hey-Final-Crisis-is-not-so-bad kibbutz.

Now that the story is starting to look like a story and stuff is happening, it’s more enjoyable. Mind you, it still suffers from some of Morrison’s less entertaining idiosyncrasies, like his tendency to completely avoid clear, easy-to-understand storytelling as if it had leprosy and herpes. Case in point, I had to read the book twice just to sorta understand what happened in the fight between Stewart and the Alpha Lantern. Then again, considering that even when he is being extra crystal clear, the fanboys will go “I DON’T UNDERSTAND! YOU HAVE TO BE ON DRUGS TO UNDERSTAND THIS! MORRISON LOL!” so if I were him I probably wouldn’t bother at this point either. Case in point, the number of people who I have seen complaining they don’t understand how Turpin managed to escape Darkseid despite that it is explained right there! I know reading Morrison takes more patience and effort than your average comic, but sometimes, fanboys, you are just dumb.

Still, let’s break this down to make it easier.

THE GOOD:

I think I like the concept of Final Crisis so far. Darkseid has won, and since he is Darkseid and he doesn’t give a crap what anyone else thinks, he hasn’t told anyone. Darkseid is secretly but steadily transforming Earth into his private hell, which involves completely screwing up with the superheroes’ lives through Libra and the usual supervillains. Seeing Darkseid as an actually scary presence rather than as everyone’s punching bag, or as generic villain from space is a nice change of pace for the guy. If there is one villain who should be The horror from outer space, then that guy is Darkseid.

I like the Big Belly Burger slogan. Sure in the real world BBB would get lynched by the health nazies, but I like the slogan.

I like that now the New Gods can take control of people and wear their skins. Maybe they do it through the anti-life equation. It’s creepy how Turpin is slowly noticing he is being invaded by Darkseid’s mind. Actually this part was well done. Turpin is acting completely out of character and being more nasty and violent than ever. I was confused at first because he was still looking for the missing kids, the ones he found in the first issue. But me of little faith, it was not another continuity error, the last thing this needs, and it is addressed later when Turpin finds the factory of evil.

I like that Sonny Sumo can drink his water while on fire.

And my favorite thing from this issue, TIME TRAVELING GOD KILLING BULLETS!

Gods kill each other with bullets that travel through time! Eat it, Starlin, you and your God shooting lasers at each other tired crap! Darn... now I want a time traveling shampoo arrow. :(

THE BAD:

The JLA dialogue still feels weird. I know they have to do some exposition, but it’s odd when they start on that, especially Wonder Woman; Morrison never quite got her right when he was writing JLA.

I am still not sure what the hell happened in that fight between John Stewart and the Alpha Lantern. I can fill the blanks and say that Stewart managed to hurt her back, and that’s why he is alive, but he is too hurt to talk and tell the JLA that the Alpha Lantern is evil. I shouldn’t have to fill that many blanks about it.

How the heck Wally knows where the bullet comes from? I know he was investigating that, but it reads like he just pulled all the info out of his ass.

In conclusion, quod erat demostratum, this whole thing might read better as a trade. Anyway, I enjoyed this issue despite some very rough edges, or at least I enjoyed more than the first. Well, I hope it keeps going up.
