NYC feels strange after four days in New Hamp. I've always had the narrative in my head of the city being dead/mechanical/unfeeling and the country being surrounded by life and growing things, and it's true that there are crickets and lakes and suchlike in Keene. but coming back here, it's the city that feels alive to me, like it's a sentient thing breathing hot and damp down my neck all the time.

in one of my interviews (!) earlier this week, a former New Yorker who now works in NH told me "My most stressful days here, over my 18 years, have never been as stressful as my least stressful days when I lived and worked in the city."

probably going to karaoke at Suite tonight, take advantage of my last opportunities to do so. if things go well, i'll be up in NH full time by mid-September.

anyone know a good resource in NYC for fixing busted computers? My CD-ROM drive is inexplicably not working, and I'd like to get it fixed. Any recommendations?
