So, about Wesley and Aveline...

Bioware didn't even bother to try to resolve the inconsistency of the statements made in the first game about Templars not being able to have families with the very up-front way they presented Aveline as married to Wesley.  This?  Drives me crazy.  It's not even like it's a different country, or a different sect of the Chantry.  So, I am looking for an explanation that makes sense to me and I thought I would come pose the question to you guys for discussion.

Theories I've seen:

1. It's not a legal marriage, and templars are expected to be chaste, not celibate.  So while Aveline and Wesley may have considered themselves married, they were not married in the eyes of the Chantry and any children they might have had would have been considered Aveline's alone.  This is probably the most reasonable method to explain the inconsistency.

2. Templars are allowed to get married, as long as a) you're not posted at the Tower (imagine the conjugal visit nightmares!) or b) not particularly high up in the hierarchy.  If you have dreams of becoming Knight-Captain or Knight-Commander some day, you'd best stay unmarried.

3. Policies vary depending on the particular chantry you're serving.  The farther you are away from the Grand Cleric, the easier time you'll have having an actual life outside of your profession as a Templar.

What do you guys think?
