What a busy weekend!

Friday night I drove to Syracuse in a severe weather warning. I was supposed to go out to Buffalo, but it just seemed a little too crazy to drive all that way in the dark and rain and wind, so I went to Against the Grain instead. It turned out to be pretty cool. Ellen went too. Even though it wasn’t a normal night it was still pretty fun, and afterwards somebody handed me Aaron’s guitar so I spent quite a while playing that. It was blue and had a really good tone. I also listened to Matt play piano for a bit. He’s really good and I’m hoping him, Jeremy and I can jam sometime this week.

I drove out to Buffalo on Saturday. Steve wasn’t there at first so I hung out with Tom and Dan Lance, alternating between Elf and FEAR, which are two very strange things to alternate between (“I’m in love, I’m in love, and I don’t care who knows it!” vs. “Kill them! Kill them all!”). Then, Steve bought us all dinner at a Chinese buffet because he won a weight-loss contest. 27 pounds is very respectable! It sounds like his job is going really good.

After that we went to see the Little Theater second stage show “Painting Churches.” The play was pretty good. What I liked most, though, was seeing all the people I miss; Zack, the Blur, Lindy, Johnny, Christina, Joe Spence, Chris Rymes, Little Kelly, and others as well. Out in Utica it feels like I don’t belong there, like I’m a stranger in a strange land. Seeing everybody reminded me that I belong in Buffalo, and I belong with those friends. It felt really good to hear that people missed me, because I’ve been missing them. Going to Buffalo reminds me what it feels like to belong. Utica was only meant to be a temporary thing. My place is in Buffalo, with the people who’ve been a sort of late-night, man-hunt playing, strangely-dressed wacky family to me.

This trip has strengthened my conviction that I need to come back to Buffalo. The plan is to come back when my lease expires. The Hartford has a small office in Buffalo, and I’m really hoping that I can underwrite out of there. I’m doing pretty good so far, so they might let me do it. That would be the perfect solution. More and more, I feel sure that Utica was only a temporary thing. That was the original plan, and it still is the plan. I just have to figure out how to make that happen! If anybody has any other ideas or advice, let me know!

How is everybody doing? I would really like to hear from people I haven’t talked to in a while. This time has taught me just how important it is for me to reach out to people, and I want to hear how everybody’s doing!
