Caterina opened her eyes, and childishly, immediately closed them. For the sight that greeted her eyes was not her familiar suite, with its ivory walls and tall casement windows. No, this was an unadorned room, completely unfamiliar to her. But it was still there when she opened her eyes the second time.

She rose to her feet and, gathering her courage, stepped through the door.

Into a neon-lit room filled with people, and the frantic sound of technopop or synth or some other form of music with which she was only vaguely familiar. She had only a moment to exchange horrified looks with the partygoers and murmur a vague apology before she stepped back, into the door.

This was something totally different. Now, the sight that greeted her was the interior of an eating establishment, heavily scented with exotic spices. Still, it was utterly unfamiliar, and again, the sight of the slender blonde standing there in the middle of the entryway, completely dazed, drew more than her fair share of attention. "I'm terribly sorry." she whispered again, turning and stepping through that door with something almost like panic moving her feet.

Initially she thought she'd been returned to the same small set of rooms she'd awakened in. But no, this had its subtle differences, small touches here and there, including those almost-dead plants struggling to live in the windowsill. But the most telling of all was the tall man seated at the table, casually leafing through the newspaper. And suddenly, some of that tightly-controlled panic dissipated. For if he was here, it could not be all bad. "Abel...." she was not even certain if she'd actually spoken, or if she'd only meant to. But as he looked up, she knew she must have. She gave him a somewhat tremulous smile and folded her hands neatly together, as if all were normal.

caterina, abel
