Being stuck in my own little hell of complicated, heavy, too-serious Pike writing, I've forgotten how wonderful fanfic can be. I've forgotten that it can be easy and still deep, flowing and still with edges. That it can be populated by complex people and still not feel like molasse to walk through.
Loved everyone here, loved especially Chris' little secret of adoring Winona back then, love all the many things that are alluded and never explained because in real life, things don't get all explained either.
There's hoping you'll write that sequel because I've got a big Recovering!Pike fetish and Winona is great and I want to see them growing through all that trouble to ride into the sunset.
Thank you so much for this story. Haven't enjoyed one that much in a while.
I'm kinda on the fence about the sequel. I know what I want it to be about but I don't know when: immediately after this, or a year later, or what. Immediately after would mean the nitty-gritty of recovery; a year later would probably be more feasible in terms of the plot I've got in my head. We'll see.
I also know I should probably give Kirk and McCoy a happy ending, so at the very least, that will happen. :)
You already know what I think - but this is such a wonderful ensemble piece. Yes, also a very nice het romance, with lots of snarky humour...but above all it's a great weaving together of all of their lives and I love it. I also love that none of them is perfect, they are all flawed humans that do occasional stupid and/or inconsiderate things - but they work it out like adults (eventually)...and yay for engine-room hooch...
Enjoyed this so very much. First of all, there should be more Pike fics. Just because. And second, I'm not a huge fan of stories that make Winona into some sort of villain, so I adore coming across stories that give her a realistic post-Narada story arc.
Love the relationship you've built between Pike and Winona here, from their back story to the issues over how he dared Jim into going to the Academy, to Winona's reactions to having to go through a virtual replay of the Kelvin. And the way they dance around each other at each stage is very believable and so much fun to watch.
Beyond that, I really loved the way Winona and Jim interact, his relationship with Bones, and all the surrounding players, particularly Number One and Dr. Boyce. Also, now that I'm done reading, I need to go get some ice cream, for which I blame you entirely. ;-)
Lovely read. I do hope you decide to do a sequel, because I really enjoyed this world and would love to see more of it, but if you end up leaving it here, it's very satisfying as well.
Thanks! I'm glad you liked the story. I can't stand Winona-the-villain either.
In my head a lot of this was my revenge on the 'I dare you to do better' line, which I thought was pretty horrible. Especially if Pike actually knew George Kirk.
I just read the whole story today and I absolutely loved it! I liked the sex scenes too, because they felt realistic (this is not always required but really nice now and then!) and were hot.
Given that Jim is usually more primary in what I read (though I HAVE read some really great Winona fic before) it's interesting to see some of his traits in his mother, which really it's her traits we see in Jim.
Your Pike was really good too.
I also liked seeing all the assorted other pre-TOS characters and their relationships with Winona and each other.
Thanks! I can't really accept the movie's premise that Jim is essentially a clone of his father with a bit more rebellion, so I enjoy giving Winona a distinct personality that dovetails into his. I'm glad you liked the story (and the sex).
Enjoyed the story - for some reason, picturing Number One as a fan of ice cream was wonderfully funny. (Because in my head, Illyria does not have ice cream, and I can only imagine her first encounter with it during her Academy days.....)
Yeah, I can't see that Illyria has ice cream, either. And oh, goodness--it must have basically been orgasmic. :) Glad you liked the story! Thanks for reading.

And of course: engine-room hooch is possibly my favorite part of the story. :)

And ice cream cures all ills!
