The world without wow continues to roll.

Well it’s that certain stage of life again when you look back over your own life for the last year and even the whole decade and analyze parts in detail about things you’d wish you done, things you wish you hadn’t done and things you’ve learned. You know if you start whining about your past on any other day or decide to just analyze 10 years of your life randomly people would call you Emo, crazy or OCD. However because 2010 calendars are working it’s considered festive and alright to look over the things you’ve done. On a personal level I’d like to say I was blissfully happy and all is well in the world, but I’m not and the most I scrape out of life is achieving some sort of pride and joy from whatever I have and I think that’s why things aren’t so bad.

This was going to be a post about what I’ve learned, who I’ve met and what’s changed for myself for the last 10 years in a effort to try and better myself, but because there’s a chance other people will read this I though I’d try something positive instead so I bring you:

The Top 10 of everything that was awesome about the 00's:

#1 - Gnomes Collect underpants
#2 - ????
#3 - Profit!!
#4 - Balloons
#5 - Sticky back plastic
#6 - A used washing up bottle
#7 - Bake for 30 mins at Gas mark 6
#8 - Repeat steps 1-7 until you have enough to buy a flute
#9 - Then take a step to the right and breathe out
#10 - Rule #35

And now for something completely different:

10) Go - Ah, the ancient game of Go, filled with mystery, complex challenges and the realization there are a dozen hundred thousand people who are better than me. Rooted in with my ancestors from china and there is good chance someone in my family played this game hundreds of years ago. I feel kind of proud to be able to say that and will do all I can to teach what I know to friends and generations to come. X-box games, WoW and any other community games might exist today but I don’t think there can anything like Go which links the far past with the far future like this can.

9) Conventions - 2003 -2009… every SINGLE year. The people who runs cons and the people who attend cons seem a world away but at its heart is a community. Something you can arrive at and all share your love off. Some people are more into parts (like cosplay, gaming, comics) than others and some people are downright crazy, but it’s always nice to attend one of these and feel a kindred sprit from all those around you.

8) MSN - The idea that I can have friends solely through this one program is an amazing feat. It’s not only built up and maintained friendships throughout the years but it’s been responsible for a relationship, heartache and just someone to talk to when I was at my absolute lowest. I really can say this one program changed, saved and altered my life throughout the decade and that’s something not easily matched.

7) Elsa Lee - Although a name that is pretty much spat to the ground now every time I utter it, I honestly can’t deny the impact this person made and although things have and will change with time, those things will never change and will always be remembered. I’d like to keep this positive so let’s say no-one else has been able to bring about the intensity and sheer range of emotions like she has.

6) webcomics - Although not as involved in the world as I’d like, I now probably have spent more time reading comics on-line than reading in real life. I love the humour and sheer scope that exist out there and the dream is one day to be apart of it.

5) Sweatdrop - while simple in conception, the people, name of Sweatdrop Studios and it’s forum members have been an important part of my life for the last half of the decade. I made some good friends, met some very talented people and even childhood heroes who I have the deepest respect for. I can safely say some of my closest friends are here and in a time when I needed support the most you guys were there and that’s something I’ll remember beyond this decade.

4) Japan - The land of Rising otaku. From the products it’s produced to being the most ideal holiday experience I can safely say no other county has had an influence on me like this one. May its future be bright and it’s will strong!

3) Family - As always, it’s the reason I’m here and my literal blood bond. I love them all and hope as many of them are around to share the next decade with me that are here now

2) MUJS - vast in scope, ever changing in members and sometimes just plain scary, I can safely say these are my friends. It’s certainly altered a lot and I very rarely have deep meaningful conversations, but sometimes it’s just nice to go somewhere where everybody knows your name.

1) So if you’ve actually clicked the link and read though this you can probably guess Gnomes aren’t the most important thing over the last 10 years. If that is the case then what is? What one item could be more important than my friends, my family, my hobbies and even my first real love? Well that first place and award can only go to one thing; The Internet.

Now I’m not claiming that the internet is more important than any of them but looking over the whole list it’s the one thing involved with nearly all of them and I can honestly say some of them would not be on th list without it. It’s not just shaped my life but pretty much the structure of the entire world and every community it’s reached. I’ve spend more time on the net than doing anything else and while that does sound like a lot of wasted time you have to remember that includes forming friendships and relationships which are things I value very highly. One day I have no doubt it will as obscure as the home landline or the postal service, but for the last 10 years nothing has changed the world and my life like the internet and for that it deserves #1.
