Yunho stared at his phone for the longest time, awaiting the phone call he had hoped for-but felt, and knew, he would never receive. It had been this way for two days. Jaejoong said he’d be back-so where was he? Jaejoong was losing his grip on keeping promises. Yunho heard the door open, expecting it to be Changmin checking on him, when in fact it was Jaejoong. “You said you’d call,” Yunho murmured softly, dark eyes looking up to meet his lover’s.

Jaejoong only smiled awkwardly. “Sorry, babe. I lost track of the days. You know how it goes when I travel for business,” Jaejoong responded, leaning down to kiss Yunho’s lips.

Yunho didn’t exactly return the kiss-he just kind of sat still. “What’s wrong?” Jaejoong asked.

“You promised you’d call me, Jae. It only hurts a little when you don’t uphold the promises you make.”

“I said I was sorry, Yunho. I just get distracted.”

Yunho had a feeling he knew what-or who, rather-was the cause behind Jaejoong’s distraction. Jaejoong had been traveling a lot recently with a couple of good friends-mutual friends of his and Yunho’s. Yunho knew which one just might have caught Jaejoong’s eye. For the longest time, this friend had tried to steal his Jae away from him. It appeared he was steadily succeeding. But Yunho would do anything to keep Jaejoong.

One week later and one more business trip came up. Conveniently for a little longer after Jaejoong and Yunho’s little argument over jealousy and attachment issues. Jaejoong was busy shopping, preparing for this ‘business trip’ he was intending on going on. Yunho decided it was time to confront this friend of his.

He found him in his usual spot-a Starbucks across town. The young man was ticking away casually at his laptop when Yunho touched his shoulder. “Hey, Junsu!” Yunho greeted him rather cheerily, disguising the frustration in his voice.

“Yunho,” Junsu replied. “How’s it going?”

“Eh, swell enough I suppose. You mind talking a moment or two? I was thinking we could discuss some plans for Jaejoong’s birthday. It’d be cool to surprise him.”

Junsu lit up like a Christmas tree. “Oh, sure.”

“Let’s walk and talk. It’s a little crowded in here.”

Junsu heartily agreed and they began walking. However, the conversation was not directed at Jaejoong’s birthday. “You like him, don’t you? Jaejoong. You’ve been trying awful hard for a long time to get to him. Are you satisfied that it may just be working?” Yunho snapped immediately.

Junsu stopped to stare at him. “If it’s about us taking trips together, you’re pretty mistaken, Yunho. I’m not interested in him.”

“That’s bullshit.”

“You’re gathering this from that one time I kissed him on the cheek, aren’t you?”

“You two slept together that night. While we were dating.”

“You’ve got no proof.”

“Except for Yoochun’s walking in on you and then telling me, and Jaejoong’s sad confession.”

Junsu was suddenly very quiet before he sighed. “Well, if you haven’t noticed, he doesn’t want to be around you for very long anyway. So it’s not really my fault he wants to be with me more than you.”

Yunho really couldn’t remember losing it, but he did. Suddenly, he found himself with Junsu against the wall, striking him furiously. Junsu was essentially flailing to get the elder off of him, though nearly unsuccessful. A passer-by had called the authorities and a couple of uniformed officers were plucking a thrashing Yunho off of Junsu. “You fucking backstabber!” Yunho screamed, thrusting his arms either way to attempt to shake the officers.

“You’re just pissed off because he’d rather be with me than you, Yunho. It’s always been that way and you’ve just not fucking realized it!” Junsu screamed back.

Junsu shook off those trying to see if he needed medical attention. His eye was an interesting shade of yellowy-green, black, and purple. His bottom lip was swollen and bleeding, and a bit of blood seeped from his left nostril. The sound of a shattered heart-a fragmented friendship-could be heard over the sudden silence.

Yoochun, still being a relatively decent friend, bailed Yunho out of jail later. They didn’t talk as Yoochun took him to his vehicle. Yoochun just nodded solemnly at him before leaving him. Yunho made it home and it was silent, but a light in the living room was on. Jaejoong was sitting on the single loveseat, right next to three or four suitcases. “I’m leaving tomorrow, Yunho,” Jaejoong murmured.

“I remember. Business trip.”

“No, for good.”

Yunho felt his heart sink into his stomach. He felt his eyes burning with brimming tears. “What?”

“I already know what happened. It’s bullshit, Yunho. There was nothing-“

“He fucking told me, Jae. He told me that you were with him. Don’t lie.”

Jaejoong then fell silent and sighed. “I don’t remember when you started acting like this.”

“I don’t remember you being such a fucking whore, either.”

Jaejoong stood quickly, fists curled and approached Yunho. “At least he treats me decently.”

“When have I treated you wrongly?” Yunho remarked smugly. Jaejoong didn’t respond. “Should have just told me you didn’t fucking love me, Jae.”

“I’m leaving tomorrow.”

“Good riddance.”

Yunho sat in the kitchen amongst nothing but silence and the ticking of a single clock. Hours had passed since Jaejoong left for the airport. His flight wasn’t for a bit longer-maybe an hour.

Yunho buried his face in his hands. “Goddamnit, Jae. I never… I never hurt you. I only wanted the truth.”

Yunho slammed his hands on the table and grabbed his car keys, racing out the door, to his car, and down the highway in the direction of the airport.

Yunho stumbled into the airport and raced up the escalator to find Jaejoong just entering the doorway to head down that long hallway toward the plane entrance. Of course, Yunho had dodged some security here and there. “Jae! Jaejoong!” Yunho shouted, continuing to run.

He slowed to a stop when he noticed Jaejoong turn around. Junsu’s hand was on Jaejoong’s lower back but Yunho brushed it off. “Jae, please. Please just come back. Stay. Stay, Jaejoong.”

Jaejoong slipped out of Junsu’s grasp, taking a step in Yunho’s direction. Yunho started to head forward a bit until Jaejoong promptly ceased that by holding up one hand. “Yunho” Jaejoong murmured, “I just can’t.”

He then shook his head faintly and turned around, rejoining Yoochun and Junsu, who began to walk down the hallway, boarding the plane. Above the hallway it read, ‘America.’ Yunho knew Jae was never coming back.
