Original Fic: The Truth About Lying

Mar 27, 2010 00:23

My friend Sara and I were talking about The Invention of Lying the other day and she happened to call it The Truth About Lying. It kinda stuck. Had to write a short story for class so I used it for inspiration. It amuses me so I thought I might post it. I don't care if anyone likes it or not, that's not why I'm a Creative Writing major anyway. Btw it may or may not be a male narrator :)

The Truth About Lying

Cliché 1: Lying is easy, the truth is hard.
In theory it sounds legitimate, but have you ever lied? I mean really lied, not just calling the sky green and the grass blue, or exaggerating the amount of time that has passed. I mean lying to the point that there is no truth, the lines are blurred and skewed and everything is indecipherable. It’s mentally exhausting creating a lie-I’m a crafter of stories-and the lies to cover the lies take even more work, like the little old woman who swallowed a horse, she died of course.

Cliché 2: Lying is the most fun a girl can have without taking her clothes off.
Well I’d have to be a girl to understand whether that is legitimate or not. Maybe I am a girl, you’ll never know. So are we talking about lying in bed? Maybe there is prostitution involved if she’s taking her clothes off. Maybe there is some role-playing going on. Barbie is a lie. Her real name is Lilli and she’s a German prostitute. Ever wonder why Barbie can be anything, a doctor, laywer, veterinarian, scuba diver, gymnast, you name it she’s done it? Bet you learned something new today. Maybe lying is easy for Barbie, what would parents think if they knew the truth?
     Speaking of children…

Cliché 3: Santa is magic, the Tooth Fairy is magic, and even the Easter bunny.
How can lying be wrong when parents perpetuate the cycle? Is the truth hard? No, it just sucks the whimsy out of poor children’s lives. Don’t take candy from strangers. Oh, but you can take candy from the strangers that sneak into your house at night, that leave treats, presents, creep into your bedroom, hands under your pillow, and leave money-oh dear, prostitution?-because those strangers are magical and not creepy at all. And when the stork comes to drop a new baby on the doorstep, hope that no one has recently watched Hitchcock, they might get the wrong experience from the happy day.

Cliché 4: There is truth in every lie.
Only for those that think lying is easy. It’s only easy if you’re not really trying, if you construct a story around a truth. Really trying is pulling a lie out of thin air, constructing it out of nothing, letting it grow, build, transform, absorbed, never deteriorated from exposure. A lie needs exposure, otherwise it’s just a secret. A secret isn’t a lie. But a secret is truth.

Everything I say is a lie. Does that add up for you? Does 2+2=5 yet? Not that that’s a real lie anyway.

My name is Human. A bit strange? Would you believe if I told you my real name? Maybe Human is my real name. You’ll never know.
Lying is my nature, human nature. Lying is “Human” nature.

Did you know I swallowed a fly? Perhaps I’ll die.
